"The People in the Trees" by Hanya Yanagihara has a line where they describe the dogs used in experiments.

It goes something like:

"They spent all day sitting, for they were unable to stand, in their cages staring patiently at their paws waiting for the next round of invasions".

I was reading it in the bath and sobbed for about an hour

Can't remember the exact wording and cannot physically look at the book again as it's too heartbreaking (am welling up just typing this) but the bit in Charlotte Gray where the little boys are at the concentration camp.

stpancras I just re-read the trilogy before La Belle Sauvage is released on Thursday and those lines broke me, as well as...

'...don't you go before I do...' he whispered. '...I couldn't abide to be anywhere away from you for a single second,' she whispered back

Since I was crying anyway I thought I might as well look it up:

'Jacob took André's hand and found that there was already something in it – a tin soldier. André kissed Jacob's shorn head, the stubble tender on his lips. There was another room, another door, with bolts and rubber seals, over whose threshold the two boys, among many others, went through icy air, and disappeared.'

I hope the fucking bastards who did this to real children in real life are burning in hell (although sadly I'm not religious).

That's powerful. I got goosebumps. I've never been able to read of watch the boy in the striped pyjamas either as I know what happens.

It is same line in book and film... Really made me cry.. The realisation that sometimes saying sorry would not be enough, was a hard lesson for a romantic dreaming 15yr old.

Actually that line from 'His Dark Materials' always gets me too. Cry for ages ,and there is another point in the book between Lyra and Will where I sob too! ( Won't say which bit in case anyone is thinking of reading the trilogy).

I can't think at the moment, but the final scenes from Tom's midnight garden always make me sniffle. I took DD for her 10th birthday to see an stage adaptation of it and oh my world, not a dry eye in the house!.

This is a long one but gets me every single time - from the Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver:

The whole scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows where Harry is about to go meet Voldemort, and knows he's facing his own death but this bit in particular:

From 'Letter to D: a love story' by Andre Gorz.

The book comprises of a letter written to the author's dying wife. It's hard to pick out the most heartbreaking lines as it's not a work of fiction and the entire slim volume is heartbreaking.

This is the most-quoted line, though.
