We're currently read famous five but the sexism is wrecking my head.

Want to offer her some alternatives, any suggestions? Smile

I've never read swallows and Amazons. Will it not have the same issues being a similar era book?

Found the mighty girl site ! Many thanks Smile

Bought Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls on way home. Went down well st bedtime. Grin

Swallows and Amazons is great - the girls are tough and brave and independent (admittedly one of them does all the cooking). And it's significantly better written than the Famous Five but if she's into that then she'll probably enjoy the setting of S&A.

Harry Potter? The first couple would definitely suit her age and she can grow with them.

Pippi Longstocking and Ronia the Robbers daughter were both enjoyed by my DS at that age.

Don't think she is ready for HP tbh. Attention span not quite there Smile

Will add Pippi to the list though that is another classic I never ready myself Blush ! No one was interested in what I read growing up so it was all very random!

Electric Girl looks fab, but she is only 6! Is it all cartoon style?

The Goth Girl and Ottoline books by Chris Riddell are fab, my DD was 6 when she got hooked on them! They are funny, lots of in jokes for adults and beautifully illustrated.

Also, Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf books are wonderful, funny and a tiny bit scary but the Wolf is always outsmarted by Polly!

I was so fed up with Enid Blyton and books where girls were either princesses or Fairies we're probably going too far the other way Grin.

the Izzy books by Pamela Butchart, starting with Baby Aliens Got my Teacher. All brilliant.

Other DS finished Electrogirl in a day. It's about a girl who turns in to a superhero. I think the target audience is slightly older, but he's 6 (almost 7) and advanced reader and read it himself. It's obviously a different space then famous five, but has a strong girl as the main characters being active, etc.
