I'm in a bit of a rut with my reading and wanting to read a page turner like woman in black, the colony, small stranger, the secret of crickley hall etc.

Does anyone have any reccomendations?

I've tried advanced search but obviously not searching for the right terms.

Haven't read it because I'm an utter wuss but Turn of the Screw?

I'm a nanny and also remember the bib adaptation from around 1999... I may also be classed as a wuss. I'm not talking scary scary just a threat of menace Blush

Dark Matter by Michelle Paver

Oooh I can recommend!!

Michelle Paver:

1st book is Dark Matter, I've read this and it is one of the very few books that has genuinely creeped me out,so much that when I re-read it, I have to be in bed otherwise I daren't turn the lights off to go upstairs!

She also has a new book, Thin Air. I haven't read it yet, but DH has and says it's fab.

They are both wintery dark night reads

If you like police procedural novels that mix a dark atmosphere and sense of the unexplained you will enjoy Phil Rickman's series about the woman priest, Merrily Watkins, in the Borders between England and Wales.

I have just read the 14th in the series; All of a Winter's Night. I devoured it today because I love the characters and want to know the story. Next week I will reread it, taking in the excellent writing and enjoying Phil's skill in creating an atmosphere that makes my skin creep, while I make sure the lights are on!

Later in the year I will probably reread the series over a couple of months.
If you like the idea, begin with the Wine of Angels 99p on Kindle at the moment.
It's not the best of the series but if you enjoy character development, and that is an important part in the enjoyment of these novels, you need to begin at the beginning!

I'll second 'The Girl on the Landing' by Paul Today. I read it about 5 years ago and it stuck in my mind for a long time afterwards.

Just read Dark Matter on recommendation - excellent and couldn't put it down. Thanks! Luckily I'm on maternity leave and DS slept a lot today! Grin

The Ritual is good, can't remember who wrote it sorry. Not highbrow or anything but a great page-turner.

Thanks guys will take a look - started reading a thriller last night and this morning having had very little sleep and in the dark I was sure I was being followed by a tall woman in a long dark cape; I live in a cathedral city so it was even more daunting walking through the outer cathedral close with her following closely behind me - god knows what she thought as I kept looking behind me as I walked, trying to walk at speed; then walking along by the local boarding school I heard them ringing their bells for some sort of event and in the darkness seriously creeped myself out Blush Blush Blush

Peter James - The House on Cold Hill - creepy and quite woman in black-ish in terms of haunted/cursed house! Every time the sun flashes off a car window you'll get a bit shivery after...

He writes the Roy Grace novels if you're also into crime thrillers! Soe of the are a bit creepy!

Yes to The House on Cold Hill. I had to palm the kids off on Dh for the day so I could read it all.
Came mooching on here to get some ideas and added the girl in the landing to my 'to read' list.
