Any ideas or recommendations at all please?

For a retired couple, young at heart, love Europe & longhaul including Australia.

If this is in the wrong section, please report & I'll relocate it Smile

Bill Bryson?

Well, Bill Bryson would be the first port of call.

But you could try the following too:

Slow Train to Guantanamo by Peter Millar (he has also written a travelogue to Morocco and a novel set in Moscow, very evocative)

Coins in the Fountain by Judith Works is a great memoir that will transport you to Rome

Interstate by Julian Sayarer for USA

Cartes Postales from Greece by Victoria Hislop is her latest book that, with photos, will transport you to Greece...

Hope you find something you like!!

A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush by Eric Newby. A 1950s travel classic; and/or the Road to Oxiana by Robert Byron.
