Just finished Good Morning Midnight

Feel a bit greedy starting another thread asking for recommendation but.....I really enjoyed this book, it reminded me of the kind of books I read as a student, many moons ago. Any other Jean Rhys recommendations or books set after world war 1, preferably dealing with people feeling disaffected or on the margins of society, please?

Wide Sargasso Sea is in my top three books. It's told from the point of view of the first Mrs Rochester from Jane Eyre. Don't let that put you off - it's an amazing book in its own right.

Thanks that's, of course, the obvious Jean Rhys but I was worried it would be TOO depressing???

Well, it is a bit. But she brings her to life in such a way that she ends up more vivid than Mr Rochester or Jane Eyre.
It's just so beautifully written and so perfectly formed that reading it is satisfying despite the ending.

Nightwood by Djuna Barnes has a bit of the same flavour.

Totally different but the first one that I thought of (fits the bill for people-on-the-margins-of-society) is Under the Volcano by Malcolm Lowry. It is quite depressing, though!
