Christopher Fowler ( the non Bryant and May ones)
Michael Marshall Smith
Shaun Hutson for good old gross out mindless gore.
Ramsey Campbell - gone off his game a bit but check out his earlier stuff.

Adam Nevill is fab! I've read all of his and one of them I couldn't read at night because of the scary Blush

Laurel K Hamilton, Anita Blake series. First 5 are great, then gets a bit, off...

FG Cottam - particularly liked The Waiting Room.

Most of James Herbert's stuff but especially haunted, ghosts of sleath, Ash and the secrets of crickley hall. All very good ghost stories.

For a bit of gore the rats series and the dark.

I agree with FancyPuffin, Adam Nevill is v good, really properly scary stuff. If you want something paranormal but more mystery/crime fiction than outright horror then Phil Rickman is excellent, especially his Merrily Watkins series.

Michelle Paver - Dark Matter. Recommended on here at Halloween, a proper ghost story.
Jonathan Aycliffe - The Lost. Vampires, but truly chilling.

Ninja Off is a good way of putting it! (Hasn't stopped me keeping up with the whole series - ultimate guilty pleasure.)

I'd recommend Bird Box by Josh Malerman. I flipping loved it!

Thanks everyone there is loads for me to be going on with.
I don't know what is lately I go on Amazon trawling through reviews trying to find a good book and new author to get into but I can't get into them or the book is boring and I give up on the book (something I never used to do)
Hopefully I can find a few good ones from here

Good luck! Can also recommend anything Neil Gaiman has written, not exactly horror but dark.

Read some of the earlier Peter James stuff (not the Roy Grace series) - bloody freaky some of them
