Well, that was distressing.

The kind of book you know you're going to end up reading until way past bedtime, internally screaming at the characters, feeling your emotions being openly manipulated and then eventually sobbing into your pillow at 2am.

Highly recommended.

Good distressing or harrowing? Hard to tell from the Amazon review.

Good distressing, although it's fairly clear early on that it's going squarely for the emotions so you do feel yourself being manipulated. Still gave into it at the end though and had a good cry. Themes of child loss running through which are never going to be easy to read.

There is a film coming out later this year (with Fassbender I think); not sure if I'll see it based on the book.

Ooh. I shall add it to the "to read" list. Thank you.

I loved that novel. Beautifully written but so sad. It's rare that a novel will make me cry, but this one did. Not sure I could bear to watch a film of it though.

I read it on a long train journey. I just couldn't help sniveling quietly at the end, it was a bit embarrassing.

SPOILER ALERT!!!
When she leaves the stuff there at the end so she knows she will go back. Just sob.

Just finished it - read it after seeing this thread, my goodness I can't remember the last time I cried so much at a book; and I've watched the film trailer too - looks like it might be that rare thing of a film that is true to the book.

Ah I'm glad those who read it based on the thread enjoyed it! Still not convinced about Fassbender as Tom but will wait & see.

Wish he would bring out another book now soon. Also where is K.S. who wrote the Help, it is a hard act to follow though.
