Anna was a good wife, mostly...

Anna Benz, an American in her late-thirties, lives with her Swiss husband, Bruno - a banker - and their three young children, in a postcard-perfect suburb of Zürich.

Though she leads a comfortable life, she is falling apart inside. Adrift and increasingly unable to connect with Bruno, or even her own feelings, Anna tries to rouse herself with new experiences: German language classes, Jungian analysis, and a series of sexual affairs she enters with an ease that surprises her.

Having crossed a moral threshold, Anna will discover where a woman goes when there is no going back...

Anna Karenina goes Fifty Shades with a side of Madame Bovary; Hausfrau is the exceptional, haunting, and elegant debut novel from the prize-winning American poet, Jill Alexander Essbaum.

"It cost her an effort to let him have his way and his will of her. She had to be a passive, consenting thing, like a slave, a physical slave. Yet the passion licked round her, consuming, and when the sensual flame of it pressed through her bowels and breast, she really thought she was dying: yet a poignant, marvellous death..." Lady Chatterley's Lover by D.H. Lawrence

My favourite sex scenes from a novel are from the classic Fanny Hill: Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure. It is one of the earliest works of erotic fiction and still works for me!

Jilly Cooper - when Rupert "schools" a big bottomed Hermione round a horse school, complete with leather and whips. Hilarious. Also, props to Jilly for embracing the terms bush and bonking.

I can't think of a single good sex scene, although the one between Roland of Gilead and Irene Tannenbaum in the Dark Tower series by Stephen King is one of the better ones, mostly because it's tender and sweet.
I can think of plenty of bad ones but the two worst are:

  1. also by King - in 'Needful Things' - it's hideous
  2. In Pat Barker's Regeneration trilogy - as why as I'm concerned the sex scenes turn this from a series which could be good to something utterly ridiculous

I love anything by Jilly Cooper, particularly the pubic hair topiary :-)

Sarah Waters writes powerful sex scenes in her novels that are completely thrilling to read. I love Frances and Lilian's first encounter in The Paying Guests which begins "It was like nothing Frances had ever known. She seemed to have lost a layer of skin, to be kissing not simply with her lips but with her nerves, her muscles, her blood." It just gets steamier from there on!

He kissed her long and deep and made use of his tongue. How he had wanted to be here, to taste her, to feel her rippled flesh over his tongue.

No sex scenes in Jane Austen, although I wish there had been one between Henry Crawford and Fanny Price. That would be worth reading! Grin

Sex scenes painted by the ever evocative and totally fun Jilly Cooper for me! Not so much explicit but hints of danger and a great bawdy storyline.

This made me laugh from A certain age by Rebbeca ray in a book my wife was reading ........... I don’t know what made it happen. I don’t know what made the change. But looking up at his face…I felt myself get wet. It came from inside and I could feel the muscles flowing, giving out that liquid…And Oliver smiled down at me, so I guess he could feel it too. He turned me over and I heard the towel fall, crumple on the floor. I heard it, even with my face crushed in the carpet…Hard and steady on the back of my head, I could feel his fingers tangle in my hair. His palm print on my neck. It was a good feeling. And I got wetter.

The helicopter position as described by Martin Amis in his novel Money.
Both hilarious and putting the screw in corkscrew!

The only sex scene from a book that's left an impression is from Forever by Judy Blume.

My fav adult erotic literature is the Anne Rice Beauty Trilogy under the pseudonym of A. N. Roquelaure. Its a BDSM fairytale, and well written, so many good scenes, Im on my 2nd copies now as I wore out the first set and the pages fell out! Anne Rice is more well know for her vampire chronicles and the film interview with a vampire, but she writes a fab naughty story!

I clearly remember the sex scenes in The Thorn Birds as I read it illicitly when I was 13, and was hugely affected by the love story of Meggie Cleary and Father Ralph de Bricassart ! The book was much better than the TV series

I love Adele Parks books. They're kinky - but real. Her books are fun and frivolous and it's true escapism. I've read lots of her books now because they're just fabulous. I can highly recommend them ... especially if you're a little frustrated!
The most recent one I've read is The Other Woman's Shoes - pure genius ... Adele just gets it and it's real and funny as hell!

sounds almost morbid o me Karin slaughter here, being that she is very vividly a writer of crime to the goriest degree haha but the moments between sarah linton and husband were brilliant. they weren't sexual just completely real and tender between two people often doing a very horrific job.i new they loved.

I have to confess to not reading too many 'sex scenes' - I did read 50 shades - but won't talk about them here lol - I think one of my favourites has to be on Titanic in the back of the car - random, sexy, passionate and fun

The brother/sister incestuous love from Flowers in the Attic by Virginia Andrews. It was such a tragic tale of the whole family being shut in the attic by their wicked mother & grandmother & the elder brother & sister eventually fell in love as man & wife
