Now I know, why it was only £3 - one of those books where nothing would happen like that.

All of her books are books where nothing would happen like that.

I haven't read this one because I've promised myself I'm not going to get sucked into her books any more.

They always sound really good, then you read them and they are bizarre and really not worth it.

Don't read it. The dialogue is shit, the storyline is shit - it depends on every single character yet acting in a way that no normal.human being would act.

I paid a pound for one of her books. Even that was overpricedGrin

Ha! Some of them are okay though, I remember when she wrote her first book and it was a welcome change from chicklit

Tbh it was probably just changing from chit lit to something different that made it seem ok Grin

Yeah that's probably true. I remember a memoire stage at around the same time....

I remember thinking the first one, about the baby, was okay. But each one after went further downhill and into the realms of the bizarre.

That one about the shadow and the handbag, the one where the people made a whole big production about the number of their house, the one with the locked rooming the rented house those are the ones I hated the most, but the rest are just as terrible.

Oh yes, actually I'm not sure why I'm surprised. This one is utterly dreadful. I've just finished it and I cannot believe it got published.

I enjoyed some of her earlier ones but the last few have been terrible. I didn't even bother with looking at this one.

Yes I agree ( although I know I'll still read this onr)
It's like a really good Agatha Christie but without the decent conclusion

I was desperate to read this book (on the kindle) after looking at the blurb (before it had been released).

Luckily I found it in the library so did not have to shell out £££ and could not agree more. I was very disappointed with it Sad

Oh bugger, I bought it in the supermarket yesterday because it was cheaper than a magazine. I haven't read anything else by her and thought it sounded interesting.

SouthWestmom · 13/01/2016 19:05

Oh well at least it was cheap....

I quite like her police series actually. I just have no clue as to.how this got published. None of the plotline hangs on anything more than a threat and it depends on all.the characters indulging each other's bizarre suggestions.

I just read this based on this thread as I was so curious and I have honestly enjoyed other books of hers.

Well, what a barge of lard. I mean, really, WTF? It was so bizarre, convoluted and I couldn't see why people just went along with things without saying "now hang on a moment..."

Plus the "feeling" about the house with the dogs is never explained, so it all kind of hinges on this being true. As if you'd just put someone up that you'd sold a dog to the week before as well! And, I might add, I have read a LOT of Year 9 writing - I mean, a LOT, and despite the efforts to make it teenagery neither Ellen nor George's writing was remotely plausible, even allowing for some dramatic effect.

I loved her first books but recently have been increasingly irritated by her convoluted and utterly insane plots and I think she needs an editor with a sharper hand!

Brian, that made me laugh.I've tried books that got good reviews on here before! Agree with both, wonder what sales are like.

First book, I have read from her, and it will be the last, awful

She has done better than that. Although I get so fed up with the police ones with all the back stories between the detectives I don't care about and can never remember from one book to the next.

Also her characters have odd names, but Ruth Rendell always did that too.

Barge of lard 😁😁 I'm going to read it soon, borrowing from my mum. I will withhold judgement!

Her early ones were good but I wonder if that's because the genre was new then?
