What 2 books would you recommend for me to read.
I like reading most things. I have read John Irving and Margaret Attwood and lots of old classics.
Last year I asked the librarian fur a recommendation:

Khaled Hosseini - A thousand splendid suns.

Sarah Waters - The Paying guests.

I enjoyed both.

My MN'er said : life is too short to read shit.

I agree. I can't waste my time reading drivel about girls in red coats, only to find they are on another thread of 'worst books I read lady year'.

So, what 2 books are your absolute recent fave's please.

Not really recent but 2 of my favourite books ever:

Atonement - Ian McEwan
The Great Gatsby - F Scott Fitzgerald

I also really liked the two you listed. Have you tried The Kite Runner (Hosseini) and The Little Stranger (Waters)? Those are my favourites by those authors.

I really loved a few of the books already mentioned but for variety's sake:

Lonesome Dove - Larry Mc Murtry
History of the Rain - Niall Williams

Oh wow lonesome dove that takes me back!
Another vote for history of the rain
And then maybe life after life or ocean at the end of the lane
But really my vote goes to eucalyptus by murray bail

I really enjoyed Station 11 and The Girl With All The Gifts.

Would recommend definitely giving Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall a read. If you enjoy that, I would also suggest reading CJ Sansom's Tudor murder mystery series.

Gillespie & I by Jane Harris
Life After Life by Kate Atkinson (and then read A God In Ruins)

Slight cheat here - The Cornish Trilogy by Robertson Davies. I'm reading it at the moment in one volume so it counts as one book! So, so good. Dense, deep, funny, fantastical, engaging.

Another recent read is Vanity Fair (Thackeray). Bloody hilarious.

The Grapes of Wrath
The Remains of the Day

Maybe not my absolute favourite two, but you say you've already read a lot of classics and these are a bit more recent.
