i can't say I'll read 50. or even 25 but i will read some.

They might not be literary masterpieces in fact they might be a bit shit.

Just be nice to have a thread where we don't have to impress with the number or quality of the books we are reading. Just say what they are and if we are enjoying them.

I'll start.

The winter children - can't remember the author. Begins with L. Ok so far. bit chic litty. advertised on mnet. Not sure if it will end up being a ghost story or not.

Thanks Theoriginal was thinking of starting similar thread as if I manage 12 books this year I will be delighted All the usual barriers, iPad, tiredness, can't find my glasses...

I'm starting by committing to finishing The Book Thief which is getting better now I am managing to read more than half a page a week.

Next will be The Lady in the Van which is thin so I have a chance

Me as well Please. Was always a fanatical reader but in the past year or so have slipped. Have piles of books on my to read pile and a fair number on my kindle.
Just finished The Liars chair. It is rubbish. Badly written with loathe some characters.
Just about to start the new Kate Atkinson one

Me as well, the 50 books thread is a bit busy (and a bit ambitious) for me. I have resolved to leave my phone downstairs at bedtime and read instead as I have fallen into a late night / early morning MN habit which is such a waste of potential reading time and I think is one reason why my attention span is so short these days.

I have just finished The Road to Little Dribbling by Bill Bryson, which I really enjoyed, but it did feel slightly deja vu if I'm honest, having read Notes from a Small Island many times in the past. I am also part way through Winter Solstice by Rosamund Pilcher, nice easy reading.

I liked, 'The Book Thief' a lot. It's not scary, but obviously it is about war and some of the atrocities of war, so some of it is obviously a bit upsetting.

Do feel free to join us all on the '50' threads anyway - I honestly don't think anybody on there is trying to impress. We just like reading and talking about books!

50 books challenge isn't a scary place at all - we all read different things. Some people like classics, some don't, some read lengthy complex novels, others read lighter novels, chick-lit, popular thrillers and much more. We're a varied crowd of enthusiastic readers, that's all. Come and join in even if you don't plan to read 50 books - nobody's counting. And everybody is welcome :)

Please don't think the 50 books thread is about trying to impress. I read all sorts of rubbish. I just love hearing what others have to say and I've picked up all kinds of ideas for books I would never have thought of trying. Come and join us.

As mentioned, nobody has to read 50 books on the thread and from what I've seen, we're reading different kinds of books, 'worthy' and 'unworthy'. The thread is more about sharing our love of reading, really.

Yes, if you are about 12-years-old. Or maybe not even then. DD (10) recently found out about the Holocaust reading Einstein's life in some detail, and shrugged it off.

Then again, Remus and I never rarely agree about fiction books, which you will see if you come over to the 50-Book Challenge thread

It's true. I like to read a bit of dick-lit Jack Reacher between sci-fi and non-fiction books

Another vote for The book thief. It's not remotely scary but I found it very thought provoking and I really enjoyed it.

I'm on the 50 Book thread but it moves at the speed of light! I find myself getting a bit lost on there and wasting time trying to find where I left off. It's a brilliant place to find new titles and authors though.
I read so many great books last year off the back of that thread.

My current read is Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel. Number 2 will probably be The woman in white by Wilkie Collins. I've had it on my kindle for about a year but keep getting distracted by other books!

The woman in White is one of the few books that i have read twice. Its brilliant.

I am not helping myself in my quest really, having downloaded The Hobbit Ive always wanted to read it, ive always wanted to like it - i have tried many times but never got past the first few pages. Now im a few chapters in and i reckon it has been because i read an awful lot to DD (chronicals of narnia, five children and it type books) so i can now read the language if that makes sense. The disturbing thing is that every time i "turn the page" on my kindle, the "time left in book" goes up

I always bookmark my last post where I've reviewed a book on he 50 Book thread, then you automatically get taken back to that point next time and just need to scroll through to the most recent. It does slow down later in the year once everyone's on board and settles into reading :)

Quog, i asked MNHQ to automatically book mark people to their last post on threads so that we don't have to wade through loads of posts to find where we left off, i ALWAYS forget to bookmark.

Got no-where with my reading today, i actually went back to bed after school drop off (had been at work since 5.30) as i was ssoooooo cold but of course i did what i usually do - fell asleep after about two pages!

I really need to knock the social media on the head. Going to try and leave my phone downstairs tonight.

It was the amount of posts that was putting me off the other threads too, I like to read everything on threads I'm on and just couldn't keep up even with bookmarking. Also, 50 is way too ambitious for me, being realistic.
