Similar to Stephen King's The Dark Tower series

I would suggest Robin Hobbs' Assassin's Apprentice series and Patrick Rothfuss's The Name of the Wind series

I've read the first two of the Robin Hobb series ( it's a trilogy) and the two current Rothfuss books. The next and final one isn't out yet
I have only read the first of the Dark Tower series, so I'm basing the recommendations on that.

The dark tower series is one of my all time favourites. It was even good on Audible!
I agree with Lion - the Robin Hobb series is awesome! It's starts with that trilogy but there must be almost 20 books weaving in and out of that 'story' and she's still writing them! I don't think you will regret it!

What is it in particular that appeals to you about the Dark Tower series?

Tad Williams' Otherland series could be worth a look. It's been a while since I read it, and it's not really fantasy but it's looooong and has a similar mixture of fantasy and weirdness. It's the first thing that springs to mind when I try to think about books similar to The Dark Tower.

Can't believe I have come across this thread. I came on here specifically to post about the exact same thing. I have been listening to the entire series on Audible over the past three months. I am now close to the end of the final book, and already nervous about what to do afterwards! I can't believe how absorbing it is. LionsTeeth if you read the first book a while ago and it didn't encourage you to read on, I would advise you to do so. I didn't enjoy the first book much at all, and only after reading reviews of the second book did I decide to give it the benefit of the doubt. I'm so glad I did.

I have Black House lined up to read next, which is a sequel to The Talisman, another Stephen King book that I think is in some ways similar to the Dark Tower. I am also planning to read the Wool trilogy, which was recommended to me. I'll give the Robin Hobbs series a try to I think - although I have one question about it - does it also cross over into non-fantasy stuff? I think one of the things I enjoy the most about the DT is how it isn't ALL in a 'fantasy' world - and isn't about goblins and dragons etc but about real people living lives that are in some way comparable to the 'normal' world.

Isshoes, glad you're enjoying the series too, I was devastated to finish them all! I also loved Black House, although for me not quite up to the Talisman, which I have read and re-read several times.

Bugrit, I liked the characters in the Dark Tower series, which you feel an empathy with (especially Roland). Also, the intricate weaving of all the separate lives and stories and worlds.

Naice have you read the Wind through the Keyhole? I probably will, although I don't know if I will want to go back to in time with the series, if that makes sense.

Not sure what the Wool trilogy is exactly, but I have been told that it is post-apocalyptic stuff, which is enough for me!

I'm just seriously dreading finishing the final book - although if the TV series does come out in a couple of years, as reported, that should keep me going! Who would play your ideal Roland, Eddie, Susannah and Jake?

Now that is a great question about ideal actors...I think Roland would be the hardest to get right (the right balance of rugged, odd, secretive and sexy). I will have to have a think.

I have heard that Javier Bardem, Russell Crowe and Viggo Mortensen have all been linked with the role. Personally I always picture Iain Glen.

Viggo a definite contender for Roland. Daniel Craig with dyed hair and a couple of years older could work - the eyes are on the right lines.
