I have just finished The House I Grew Up In (Lisa Jewell) and I liked it but I couldn't stand Meg, the oldest daughter.

I got the feeling she'd really, really annoy me if I knew her Grin Smug, judgemental, bossy and mumsy.

I also didn't like Jill, of the Ruby Ferguson pony books, as a kid. She was always so intolerant of anyone nervy round horses!

Who are yours? I'm sure I have more ...

The ghastly, sanctimonious, prissy little heroine of Bleak House. Can't remember her name. She gets the pox, survives, but is horribly scarred. Good.

I can see that! Hermione in particular would irritate me if I had been at school with her, I think.

I have to admit I could sometimes see Snape's POV re Harry!

The protagonist in Shantaram.

I had to stop reading the book because he annoyed me so much, and I usually would never abandon a book.

Thought of another one - the narrator in Incendiary.

Sex, sex, sex, my boy, I'm poor, sex, I'm still poor, sex.

I would go one further and say Harry Potter and Dumbledore.

The narrator of The Kite Runner.

Horrible, selfish, weak - willed.

Hated the book in general but I hated that character with a passion.

Lucie Manette in A Tale of Two Cities. No doubt meant to be the angelic suffering heroine but comes across like a drippy drama llama who spends half the time fainting and the other half delicately refusing marriage proposals.

Was pretty disappointed Madame Defarge didn't manage to do her in with a knitting needle Angry

Both of them in One Day. I don't know if that was the point but I found both of them very unlikeable.

And the two in The Time Traveller's Wife. To the point where I've started it twice and never got further than about two-thirds through it. Didn't care about either of them at all.

And Mr Rochester. Great romantic lead? No, no, no.

Don't get me started on the fella in The Thorn Birds. Pervert!

You were worried about getting flamed for the Harry Potter couple Doublebubblebubble and then you go and put a bloody kiss (x) at the end of your next post?!?!? Wink

I don't know, I never liked Snape even at the end when you're supposed to.

Emma in Jane Austen's Emma. In fact I hate the entire book, despite liking TV adaptations.

Emma Woodhouse needed a good slap in my opinion.

Mr Knightly what were you thinking of?

The hero of Lucky Jim. I think you're supposed to think he's a likeable but with faults. I just thought he was a tremendous wanker. He was so horrible to Margaret.

Hardy's Tess - not the first time I read it. I was actually sympathetic to her then but by the third or fourth reading, I was so angry that she accepted Angel's hypocrisy and just meekly accepted her fate yy I know it was a damning indictment of the time but seriously get a grip woman

Jane Eyre. Fucking prig.
And Mr Rochester also.

I actually have quite a lot of hate for that entire novel.

Double I agree with you. Ron's a wuss and Hermione's an annoying swat a bit like I was.

Agree about the 2 in One Day, and the Kite Runner fella. Like Eagle I thought the KR was crap anyway, just because the subject area is serious sure doesn't make it good writing. B

Cathy in Wuthering Heights
Amy in Little Women.

Yes to Cathy, and throw in Heathcliff as well. I really dislike both of them.
