I am very tempted to buy it even if it is £7 on kindle.

Yes! I have nearly finished - absolutely loving it.

I'm interested in reading it but haven't read Life After Life - hackmum do you recommend reading that first?

Report
blissofsolitude · 09/05/2015 07:16

I've bought it because I adored life after life, can't wait to start it...

Report
hackmum · 09/05/2015 11:31

Yes, I would read Life after Life first - I think A God in Ruins makes more sense if you do it that way round.

I am desperate to talk to someone about it now, especially the ending, but can't because I don't want to give away any spoilers! I'll wait to see what other people think.

I need to find a recap on Life After Life as I am crap with remembering what happened in books.

I think I will start it after I have finished My Cousin Rachel.

Is it an actual sequel to life after life? I loved life after life, but again need to recap!

Report
hackmum · 10/05/2015 11:10

It's not a sequel - it tells the story of Teddy, Ursula's brother. It covers some of the same time period but whereas Life after Life doesn't, iirc, go beyond the 1960s, this comes up nearly to the present day.

There is some degree of overlap, and Ursula features as a character in A God in Ruins, as do some of the others such as Nancy (girl next door), Izzy (the aunt) and Sylvie (the mum).

Like U2, I'm not very good at remembering what happens in books, but I found a lot of Life after Life came back to me as I was reading A God in Ruins.

Oh I'm really really really (big KA fan!) looking forward to this book.

Adored Life After Life and I may even buy it in hardback as I'm so excited!

Glad to hear it's just as good as LAL.

Just thinking about LAL, Teddy was one of my favourite characters and made me cry.

Yes. My lovely, lovely DH bought a copy as a surprise for me on publication day. I didn't even know it was coming out, but he spotted it, bought it, and left it on my desk for me to discover.

Sorry -- that's just showing off, but I had to share!

I'd forgotten this was out now - thanks for the reminder. Off to add it to my kindle then going to bed to read - what a treat!

Looking forward to reading this. I loved Life After Life. I would think you need to read Life After Life first though. Hoping it'll get cheaper soon though.

I usually wait until novels come out in paperback, but I am sorely tempted; it's only £9 on Amazon. Will certainly re-read Life after Life first.

I'm still on Life After Life - about a quarter of the book left to go.

Might use my next Audible credit for the new one.

I'm listening to it as an audio book, as I did with Life after Life.

I'm in the final third of the book and have had a lump in my throat on and off throughout. It really is extraordinarily good - so poignant. I keep thinking about Teddy, and what it means to be good. Loathing Viola, and seeing bits of myself in her. Thinking also about the generation who lived through the war - my mother and her friends, their values, how life the world has changed since they were young.

Can't recommend the book strongly enough!

I'm convinced - have reserved it from the library and will read Life After Life next week or week after. I'm 11th in the queue (but they have 15 copies!).
