Book for DH

DH always asks for "a good book" on bday-Xmas lists but I find him hard to please! He doesn't overly enthuse about a book so it's hard to know what to get him. Some favourites of his are "to kill a mockingbird", "1984" and "catch 22". I also made him read "small island" by Andrea levy as I loved it. He enjoyed it but, again, I generally just get "yeah, it was good".

Anyone have any bright ideas as to what I could get him based on stuff he likes?! Thanks v much x

My DH has just read and enjoyed The Secret History, William Boyd Waiting for Sunrise, and Pride and Prejudice.

Does he like funny books? The Flashman series are comic historical fiction.

Thank you soot! Actually DH enjoyed the secret history-I'll definitely have a look at the others you suggested! He liked any human heart by William Boyd so will look at waiting for sunrise. He's just never really been wowed by much-im more enthusiastic about books I love!

Appreciate you taking time to reply. Smile

The Green Mile by Stephen King. It's nothing like his scary stuff.

Sounds like he'd like some more classics, especially slightly off-beat ones.

'A Clockwork Orange'
'Lord of the Flies'
'Brave New World'
Maybe, 'Animal Farm' although personally, I dislike it.
Raymond Chandler stories
'Day of the Triffids'

Thanks Remus - yes I think you're right. Will check those out! Brave New World could be good as it's of the same ilk as 1984 (I think?!)

DH is a scientist though, and like sci fi/fantasy, so was drawn in by the time travel angle a bit...has your DH read the Game of Thrones books and Lord of Rings books?

Ah OK. DH is an accountant Grin. Not sure I'll get him on board with time travel!! GoT is a great shout actually. He's not read those!

Alex Shearer The Hunted
Sold as Kids' Fiction but a very dark SF read even more so when you are an adult reading it..
I like many of the books mentioned in this threat and recommend it in light of the books mentioned.

Others have recommended to me the author David Mitchell esp The Bone Clocks
but I've not read anything by him yet.
