I second Apple Tree Yard - very enjoyable read. Also, Just What Kind of Mother Are You by Paula Daly - read and enjoyed recently, The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith aka J K Rowling, A Commonplace Killing by Sian Busby. Will think of more and post later.

Some more - Into the Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes - very chilling. Tidelines by Penny Hancock, The Millennium Trilogy - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo etc by Stieg Larsson, The Franchise Affair by Josephine Tey (old, but very good), The Woman in White and The Moonstone both by Wilkie Collins. Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole thriller series - not read, but heard they are good.

They're both psychological thrillers so maybe early Sophie Hannah? (The later ones are nowhere near as good as the early ones) The Silent Wife and The Husband's Secret were both hyped as the next Gone Girl (I liked THS but was disappointed by SW) Laura Lippmann is very good too.
I've read that Erin Kelly and Louise Doughty are both excellent in this genre.
The Wicked Girls by Alex Marwood isn't quite the same genre but is really interesting in looking at how the media can shape our perception of victims and perpetrators of crime.
Megan Abbott's The End of Everything isn't a psychological thriller but is beautifully written with a teenage narrator trying to figure out just what has happened to her best friend.
Sinead Crowley's Can Anyone Help Me? is out soon and is perfect for MNers - it's all about a woman with a young baby who turns to an online forum for help. It's all quite sinister and intriguing.

I think jo nesbo is far superior to apple tree yard, gone girl and before i go to sleep which I thought were all dross - sorry!

Try The Playdate by Louise Millar, The Wicked Girls by Alex Marwood, and The Guilty One by Lisa Ballantyne.

If you like psychilogical thrillers I;d also recommend The Magpies by Mark Edwards, and The Sacarificial Man and The Woman Before Me by Ruth Dugdall (these might be a bit gruesome for some tastes but they are page turners)

The Lewis Trilogy by Peter May is very good (first book is called The Black House) As is the Garnethill Trilogy by Denise Mina.

Blacklands is chillingly brilliant. It's the first of a series of three - the next two Dark Side, and Finders Keepers I thought were good too, but perhaps not quite as good as Blacklands.

I, too, liked the two books you mention, OP. Have just read Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn, which was pretty good but not quite as engaging as I found Gone Girl. Agree with PPs who recommend Appletree Yard - it was an interesting slant on an unusual relationship. Not the same genre, but also very satisfying was The Cry by Helen Fitzgerald (but the subject - infant death - might be distressing for some). Thanks for starting this thread!

I would definitely recommend 'Into The Darkest Corner' by Elizabeth Haynes, 'Just What Kind Of Mother Are You' by Paula Daly and 'Tell Me No Secrets' by Julie Corbin - to name but a few.

I've recently finished 'The Telling Error' by Sophie Hannah and in complete contrast to her earlier novels, this latest offering was a very dull and difficult read. I had to force myself through it (I don't like 'abandoning' books), but I really struggled with this one. So I'd body swerve it

I'm an avid reader - with four children, it's my escape. And nothing beats a thriller that you just can't put down. I'd start with the Elizabeth Haynes.

What the Dead Know by Laura Lippman. So well written - character driven and complex. One of those books that you finish and immediately want to re-read when you know the twist!
