Recommendations for detective novels - British writers

Hi all. I'm looking to buy a couple of books for my poorly Grandad who's in hospital. I usually like thrillers, American writers so have no idea what ones to buy him! My mum has said he likes detective novels, British authors & based in modern times (as opposed to Sherlock Holmes for example).
Can anyone suggest any writers, particularly new releases? TIA Thanks

The Cuckoo's Calling (JK Rowling writing as Robert Galbraith) is pretty decent.

They're not exactly modern, but the john le carre spy novels are excellent. The spy who came in from the cold actually appears in a lot of best novels ever written lists.

A new writer who is quite similar to Michael Connelly is Paul Finch. His books are set around Manchester.

Mark Billingham is good, quite modern and gritty.

My mum! Can't do links but have a google of Nicola Slade 'Murder Fortissimo.' Contemporary cozy murders with a sense of humour, set in Hampshire.

Kate Ellis's Wesley Peterson novels are pretty addictive. Set in Devon.
