I'm SO over Donna disappointing Tartt. Gave up with The Secret History and this one isn't working for me either.

Yep, I thought the last 20% was tedious. Couldn't wait to finish it, which was a shame as I was immersed until that point.

Loved TSH though.

I thought it was just me Sad

I downloaded it for a nightshift and got a quarter of the way on and...it...was...such...hard...work

So I read Stoner instead. Which I loved.

oh no! Shock
I have just finished it and LOVED it! I normally struggle to keep my motivation with longer books but I was absolutely immersed in this. I actually liked the ending too.
I haven't read her other 2 but am going to now.
seems to be a bot of a love or hate book though from reviews I've read...

I don't think so Grin. I would go so far as to say it was the ultimate American Novel. It's got it all in terms of themes, language, post 9/11 consciousness...

If you don't like it, fine- I hated Catch 22. But it's not fair to say it's crap.

Agreed BOF, it wasnt perfect, but even the worst bits were better than most of the stuff I've read in the last year (including Stoner, which I did like). And the good bits were fabulous.

All in all a great read.

I thought it was great but must admit to speed reading the end. Thought her descriptions of grief were heartbreaking.

Secret History a load of old shite though. What a bunch of tossers, all of them, and so unbelievable.

I loved this. I read it in-between Christmas and new year, and I've read about ten books since and none has come close. Wonderful book.

How many of you guessed the twist about the painting not being in the lock up place?
I didn't at all!

I absolutely loved it, although the bit with the gangsters and shooting did make me do Hmm a bit.

The rest of it was brilliant, really loved it. The feeling of loss over his mother still feels heavy in my heart now if that makes sense.
