Thanks for your recommendations,

I have just downloaded
Life after life and A fine balance after reading the review page on the mumsnet site.

Will give them a go and report back..

A fine balance had about fifteen 5* reviews on here! hope it's good.

Oh A Fine Balance is the most perfect book. It's just amazing.

i've just finished Longbourn I dont usually read Jane Austen-related books as I'd fear being dissapointed . But Longbourn was really great , - not about the Bennett sisters and the others (they feature of course , but only in small ways ) but the servants and their lives ..

Me before You by Jojo Moyes is one of my all time favourite books. Also another recommendation for The Light Between the Oceans.

Laska42 Mon 10-Mar-14 18:51:38

Didnt like 'A Fine Balance' but its definately a book you dont forget ..

Stoner is a great read.

The secret history Donna Tartt - I've tried her new one but am not getting on with it very well.

TeaAndALemonTart Mon 10-Mar-14 18:57:26

I came on to recommend Me before you, it's a fantastic book.

I loved light between the oceans too.
What I really like about reading on the kindle is that recommendations are made based on your reading history. This has opened my eyes to some books I might have not chosen in a normal real life library. Not that I have stopped using the library.
It might be worth asking in your library if they have lists of suggested authors for different genres. Hampshire libraries have them available.

The Rosie Project and Life After Life, both great. Just reading Lonbourn now and loving it.

If you like something lighter, I loved Here's Looking at You by Mhairi McFarlane - funny!

Stockhausen Mon 10-Mar-14 19:07:48

I loved the good father!

It's an oldie, but water for elephants was a stunning read.

I'm saving The Night Circus for a rainy day!

And the mountains echoed by Khaled Hosseini

Wonderful book

ihatethecold Mon 10-Mar-14 20:11:52

I am tempted by the new Khalid Hosseini book, his other 2 books were fantastic.
There is a book called The bookseller of Kabul which is also a great read if you liked his other books.

Phil Rickman is a great author, start with Wine of Angels. I have just finished Some Kind of Fairytale which was very good, also The Rose Petal Beach.

Ladyflip Mon 10-Mar-14 20:59:04

Just finished Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn which I can heartily recommend. I also second the vote for Apple tree yard by Louise Doughty, a really good book and both MN recommendations.

OldBeanbagz Mon 10-Mar-14 21:03:13

Juts finished Life after Life which i loved.

Can also recommend 12 Years A Slave (i've not seen the movie) and The Accidental Apprentice (by the Slumdog Millionaire author)

Oh and i bought My Sister Lives on the The Mantlepiece for DD which i read in one sitting (and in tears at some parts).

ihatethecold Mon 10-Mar-14 21:08:27

I tried to read gone girl so many times just can't get into it so I gave up.
Sam with One day, thought it was pants really.

BertieBotts Mon 10-Mar-14 21:11:20

I've just finished The Fault in Our Stars by John Green and it was fantastic. In fact I've started rereading it immediately, which I never do these days, but I just couldn't bear for it to be over and nothing else I started grabbed me.
