I've had this one on my wish list and just noticed it's free, for today at least.

This is the blurb: "Charlotte Abernathy is foul-mouthed and free-spirited, but she hides a dark secret: twenty years ago, when she was just eight years old, Charlotte vanished while playing near her family's home. Despite a frantic search, no trace of her was found until a year later, when the little girl turned up on the doorstep with no memory of where she'd been.

Today, Charlotte has put her mysterious ordeal behind her, even though she's never learned where she was during that missing year. Her life's a mess, and she spends most of her time trying to annoy her sister. However, when Charlotte's eight-year-old niece vanishes in similar circumstances, a fully-grown Charlotte is forced to make a fresh attempt to uncover the truth.

The Girl Who Never Came Back is a psychological thriller about a woman who is forced to confront her family's dark past. In the process, she begins to unravel the secret surrounding her disappearance, the horrific truth about her niece's fate, and the identity of the ghostly figure that still seems to haunt the family.

Total word count is approximately 57,000. Please note that this book contains frequent bad language and mild, infrequent violence. Also includes a short preview of The Dead and the Dying."

No idea if it's any good or not, but it's free so I've downloaded it to give it a try.

Has anyone finished this yet? I'm partway through and not as gripped as I thought I would be - there is something annoying me about the style. Is it worth carrying on?

Thanks, Sarah - not heard of this before but downloaded. Can't refuse a free recommendation!

I've just finished it - glad I didn't pay for it! Cantdothisagain probably only worth carrying on if you remotely care about any of the characters - which I didn't....and the explanation is so completely, totally and utterly ridiculous that I wish I hadn't wasted the hour or so I spent reading it.....

Cantdothisagain · 27/02/2014 19:43

I think I'm giving up on it - got so far and really not caring much. Oh well - it was free and worth a try. Thanks for replying!

Oh, that bad? I haven't started it yet, but it sounded so promising. Sad

I thought it was terrible, sorry! The language was totally gratuitous and I thought the plot, ridiculous. I'm angry I wasted my time reading it!

Sarah - it did sound promising, I agree. It fails to live up to promise. Glad I tried it though while it was free! So thanks for posting the link.

Sarah, sorry it sounded as though I was cross with you - I wasn't, I agree it did sound interesting! It was a good idea but squandered by the author (IMO!)

We've got four more in common on the wish lists then myflabber, mine also has Before We Met, The Poison Tree, Nearest Thing To Crazy and Under Your Skin on it Grin

I can recommend Can't Let Go by Jane Hill and I did quite like Reconstructing Amelia. And I'm the same when I add something, it sounds good at the time but then I forget exactly what it might be about.

panic it's fine, I always feel annoyed at the author as well if I feel they have let the story down. Sophie Hannah provokes me like you wouldn't believe because she promises so much and rarely delivers.
