Where would you live? Or go on holiday?

Just been watching the Hobbit, and thought oh Rivendell is nice, but wouldn't want to live there. (Being shit scared of heights and I look crap in white) The Shire on the other hand looks cosy, but dull. So Ankh Morpork, or the Ramtops for me.
So, as it's Sunday, and I'm bored, where in fiction land would you choose to live? Or just visit?

Live - Pemberley
Visit - lots of places including Narnia (minus White Witch), Lyme Regis with Captain Wentworth, Bath with Henry Tilney, yes to the Shire and also to Rohan and to Beorn's house for bread and honey. smile

Visit - Earthsea, Narnia, the Slad valley where Laurie Lee grew up, Hogwarts...the list is endless but those are my top three.

Live - Green Knowe

How did I forget Hogwarts?! Wouldn't mind a jaunt around Gilead with a young Roland too! smile

Childhood: Term times at Malory Towers, hold roaming Blyton's English countryside complete with secret islands, crumbling castles and mysteries a plenty to solve.

Adolescence: Mortmain family castle, in I Capture The Castle

Adulthood: Pemberly.

Visit - so many places! Uncle Andrew's Study - and The Wood Between The Worlds from the Narnia saga, portal to so many worlds and rather a nice place to relax between adventures. Gormenghast. The floating pirate city of Armada from China Mieville's The Scar. Was going to say New Crobuzon but although I find it fascinating to read about, I suspect actually being there would be very intense, unsettling and frightening. The traction cities from Mortal Engines; Brighton would be rather fun with the Pavilion floating up above on its cloud.

Live - Manderley, if I could have it unburnt and without Maxim and Mrs Danvers. If not then I'll settle for the boathouse, I could make it very cosy and Maxim wouldn't bother me there grin. Or perhaps Malfoy Manor - Lucius and Draco are more than welcome to stay as long as they get over the fact of my being a Muggle. Perhaps a little town pad near Diagonalley too. Or a grand townhouse in a steampunk London a la Parasol Protectorate or Northern Lights.

I don't ask much, do I?

I've always fancied a shopping trip to Diagon Alley.

Manderly features frequently in my fantasies too.

I've always fancied the castle from I Capture the Castle but for a holiday given the lack of furniture I think.

Rivendell would be lovelyto live in, beautiful scenery, lots of gorgeous male elves, libraries...I would visit Mirkwood / Lothlorien for the forests too.

I would visit Beast's library from Robin McKinley's Beauty too... all the books that have ever been written....(common theme here!)

Well Pemberley was the first that sprung to mind. Also fancy a wander around the rooms in Bath.

Pern grin but only for a holiday in the south - a fortnight in a hammock on the verandah of Cove Hold would do me beautifully...
I wouldn't mind having lunch with the faculty of the Unseen University, but that would be it for Discworld I think, too dangerous and/or primitive everywhere else!
If it was after the wars when everything was peaceful and rebuilt, and it was back up in its tree, I could live in the Inn of the Last Home in Solace (from Dragonlance) quite happily. Or several of various other taverns from different books, similar thing though, roaring fire, thatched roof, beams, beer and wine, and good food and good company grin

Peterswood, definitely. Home of the Five Find Outers and Dog. Really picturesque village and good bus links to Sheepdale market.
