Absolutely loved it! What next?

I started the night circus, but found that the magical descriptions of the world were beautiful and enchanting but the characters and story let it down, I loved the circus but I didn't care about the characters enough to finish it

Off to download it now. I've just finished Miss Perigines Home For Peculiar Children and adored it. The Night Circus keeps appearing on my recommendations so will go for it!

Miss P's was enchanting and fairy tale like and I was surprised how much I loved it.

However, it wasn't until reading the reviews after I had finished I realised it's aimed at young adults/teen market. Might explain why I read it in a day. Although I was ill.

The Vintner's Luck is amazing! I don't really see the similarities between it and the Night Circus though, except maybe the dreamlike quality? Elizabeth Knox's writing has so much more maturity and depth.

Shame the sequel was shit.

Loved it - The Night Circus, that is.

if you liked that you may like 'Vintners Luck ' by Elizabeth Knox..
it's a wings thing. ..

Sorry that was about night circus.

We had a well published author in our book group who stomped off never to return because some of the group actually liked this book. He LOATHED it and couldn't even eat his soup he was so upset that it was successful! He hated the 'then they talked about stuff' type of lazy writing.

I liked JS a lot, I wouldn't call it the book of the decade but it was well written and really inventive.

DuchessofMalfi Tue 19-Nov-13 18:20:27

JS has been sitting on my bookshelf for several years, waiting for the right moment. I think 2014 is going to be right time to tackle it.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis Tue 19-Nov-13 18:15:47

hated JS. really couldn't get into it. sad

Jonathan Strange is the greatest book of the past decade. If you liked The Night Circus then it's worth giving it a go.

Ignores the fact that JS seems to be the ultimate Marmite book

LOL look - you were invited you just didnt like the music grin

lookatmycameltoe Mon 18-Nov-13 08:49:29

I thought it was awful and couldn't finish it. I couldn't relate to any of the characters and just got bored. It's one of those books that everyone seems to love that I just don't get. I hate it when that happens - it's like not being invited to a party grin

I quite enjoyed The Night Circus - read it earlier this year, but felt the ending fell flat.

Planning to give Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell a go next year. It's supposed to be very good but it is very long, so big time commitment.

BlueSkySunnyDay Mon 18-Nov-13 00:26:36

I enjoyed it, I agree I didn't fall in love with any of the characters. It's the closest I've ever come you reading something magical like the Faraway Tree for adults though.

MrTumblesKnickers Mon 18-Nov-13 00:22:34

I really disliked it. Too many long-winded (although often enchanting) descriptions, not enough plot. Shallow characters.

sex. blush not sec

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis Sun 17-Nov-13 22:42:32

loved it. In a similar fairy tale for adults vein, but with a touch of added swearage and sec, I'm currently reading Deathless by Catherynne M Valente. Bit of revolutionary Russia mixed with Russian fairytale.

Loved it too!! Took some time to get into it though.

I didn't get on with it - can't stand novels written in the present tense. V pretty cover though!

I recently read this too, loved it!! very engaging and yes a darkish romance smile

RazaMeTimbers Sat 16-Nov-13 22:08:44

Thanks Empire, will put that on my LONNNNNGGGG reading list

EmpireBiscuit Sat 16-Nov-13 21:26:30

I guess it's ultimately a love story, based on two "magicians" who are battling it out to win within a circus. Although they don't know the rules or how a victor will be decided. The imagery is beautiful and it is fabulously written.

I would love to rewind time so I could go back to not having finished it.

Sharpkat Sat 16-Nov-13 21:23:09

Just ordered a copy based on your recommendation grin

RazaMeTimbers Sat 16-Nov-13 21:20:19

Pushing ggirl out of the way: tell me about it, in the sense that I'd like to know what it's about. Love getting recommendations
