Have just read Shadow of the Wind...it was great. I thought it might be a bit too high brow, but it was a thoroughly good read. Couldnt put it down.

What about something funny but not a novel that you can dip into without losing the plot so to speak - something like (I know it's old) Bill Bryson's Notes from a Small Island?
