I read HDM on a recommendation from teenage DS and really enjoyed the series.

How about The Observations by Jane Harris, Bel Canto or State of Wonder by Ann Patchett, The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber, Earth and Heaven by Sue Gee, The Crow Road by Iain Banks, English Passengers by Matthew Kneale.

All absorbing, original and well-written novels.

i brought them from the charity shop 2 weeks ago and they're on my "to read" list for this year.

i always wondered why they didnt make the 2nd and 3rd into films like the 1st. film was really good from what i remember

I love them all. I love them with a passion. I decided to read the,mot my year sixes this year. It failed. They were too accustomed to Roald Dahl etc.

OP I also love Lemony Snicket's a Series of Unfortunate Events. Very good. Also, the Wheel of Time books - trying to get back into these. Finally, ever played the PC game MYST? That game and its sequels plus the related books are incredibly immersive.

Film isn't a patch on the books. They got the adventure side of the story but I felt they lost the essence so it was like a shadow of the book.

Must re-read and point DD in their direction.

I liked Garth Nix's Lirael, & Sabriel series. I also enjoyed the Hunger games trilogy and am now reading Game of Thrones and am totally addicted!

If you have a spare six weeks read Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. I loved it.

I just read "the knife of never letting go" free from world book day. Very distopian. Well written though.

Love His Dark Materials except for the stupid wheeled horse things and the silly lady. Hate Sarah Waters though and have never heard of Tana French.

Have you read, 'Arthur and George' and 'Flaubert's Parrot' which are vastly superior to anything else JB has written imho.

Knife of Never Letting Go v good, although the third in the series is disappointing.
