She likes books where things happen, she is currently reading Half of a Yellow Sun. Need ideas!

What about the Mortal instruments series. Think the first one is City of Bones. DD 13y read the series within a forth night.

Ah it's got demons. She doesn't want any more vampires/demons etc

Ok. What about ''The glass castle''' by J. Walls

I read it a few years ago DD13 wanted to read it after a friend had borrowed it. She did like it but you may want to check it is suitable, although can not remember anything which I would deem unsuitable for a 15 year old.

You might want to try her on older authors like Daphne du Maurier, Nancy Mitford and Josephine Tey. I loved all those at her age.

Funnily enough, I just bought a load of Daphnes for her, I must find them.

What sort of vampires/demons has she been reading about? Proper ones or the sort that look like disco balls?

I loved Stephen King when I was her age, and still do, but if she doesn't want the supernatural side then what about one of his more normal books. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon or Misery might be good.

All those awful Twilights and spin-offs.

I think Stephen King would be too frittening, I LOVED The Stand and The Shining.

Might suggest them. I don't like his later ones. Misery was all right.

I read Stephen King at that age as well - The Talisman might be a good one to start with?

Has she read I Capture the Castle or His Dark Materials? Though they might be a bit young for her.

This looks like a good list - it's from a couple of years ago but may give you some ideas: top 100 books for teens

Or what about Neil Gaiman? Coraline, The Graveyard Book, Stardust are all aimed at young adults I think.

We have some Neil Gaiman's, I'll look for them.

That list is great, thanks. She's read about half of them, I'll look at the others.

She likes adult books, but not written in too difficult a style, like Tiny Sunbirds, Purple Hibiscus

Has she read Holes by Louis Sachar? It's very good, and plenty happens in it.

I capture the castle by Dodie Smith. She might not like it, as not much happens, but you never know.

Fire and hemlock by Diana wynne jones is for older readers.

yes, and the other one by him

Has she tried Looking for Alaska or The Fault in our Stars by John Green? They are being devoured by the 13-16year old girls in my classes, reluctant readers and A* candidates alike. Lots of deep emotion and death, I think (haven't got round to them myself yet).

yes, very keen on him, and the one about the Katherines and the one with the pin on the front cover (early onset)

I think if she's reading Half a Yellow Sun then she can cope with anything content wise-some of that book has stayed with me and I read it ages ago-brilliant but very very shocking.
Americah is the latest by the same author and lots happens.

Report
Hullygully · 24/06/2013 19:47

yes I want Americah...

I agree re content, she read Tiny Sunbirds and then gave it to me to read and I was like er, so, you understand about genital mutilation and pipeline explosions and stuff then...?!

I was thinking White Teeth and Brick Lane maybe?

I loved James Herbert at that age. If she's looking for something a little deeper then Maya Angelou's I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings had me gripped.

Tbh I'm reading the same sort of stuff now as when I was 15 because my parents bought all the recent prize winners/books of the moment and had all the classics. She can read anything and yes I think she will like Brick Lane and White Teeth. What about Margaret Atwood?

Report
Hullygully · 24/06/2013 20:25

She read Cat's Eye, maybe the eating one.

It's hard because she's very irritating and won't go through mine herself, wants me to pick and suggest! Which obvs is fair, but makes it hard.

I just tried to get my 15 yr old to read Don Quixote - no chance!

Report
tillyfernackerpants · 24/06/2013 20:32

Kingdom of the Dragon by Isabel Allende? Virals by Kathy Reichs?

Report
Hullygully · 24/06/2013 20:35

I wouldn't even try Don Quixote - no way, jose she'd read that. She doesn't like anything "old"
