What we're reading

Under the Skin - the Movie!

Ages ago I posted about a weird book I read called Under the Skin. Now apparently it's been made into a film. Anyone read it? I quite liked it but thought it quite depressing. Also, the film info doesn't seem quite "right." An alien in human form... I wouldn't have quite described Isserly as an Alien. I don't even think she's called Isserly in the film.
Might treat myself to a cinema visit though!

My book group read it a few years back. Almost unanimously liked which is unusual.

They actually filmed on the A9. I'm in Scotland and it was reported in the Scottish press at the time. Presumably there's been some issues as this was ages ago.

Not looking forward to it tbh. Not sure justice can be done to the book. But I am curious.

Yeah me too. Curious, as opposed to thinking it will be great! Really wouldn't have had Scarlett J pegged as main character though. Also interested that all your book group enjoyed it - I would have thought it quite...niche, for want of a better word. (Tis me, the OP, by the way. Name changed as bored.)

What was Isserley if not an alien?

ScarJo too beautiful for the role, tho. Isserley was nice looking at first glance, and horrifying once you started noticing everything wrong with her...

It was Michel Faber and it was a really good book.

Isserly was an alien though. Or I really didn't understand the book.

Oh I know she was.... I just never thought that words as I was reading it! Silly I know!

I think it has a slow build to revealing that, so by the time you realise, you aren't thinking of her quite that way.

Oooh yes - a trip to the flicks is in order. Dh and I both loved this bleak and thought provoking book.

I loved it too but so much of the beauty of the novel was in the slow reveal, not sure how that will translate on the screen.

I think Michael Faber is an incredible writer of multi-genres. The Crimson Petal and the White IMO is one of the best novels so far this century.

Oh!! I have heard of that, off to look it up...

I must give that another go- I've got it on my kindle, but got distracted by something easier and forgot about it.

I loved Under The Skin. I found a copy on the Tube years ago, and picked it up and didn't really put it down till I'd finished! Also loved Crimson Petal, and The Apple, I think it's called, a collection of short stories, which also feature Sophie and Sugar from Crimson Petal.

It is an amazing book and I don't see how a film can possibly do it justice. Isn't Scarlett Johannsen in it or something?

The trouble is if you see the film first then it will spoil the book for you because you will already know the twist.
