What we're reading

If I love Game of Thrones/Song of Ice and Fire, what else might I enjoy?

Just it, really! I absolutely loved A Song Of Ice and Fire - not usually that much of a fantasy reader although read stuff like Terry Pratchett and Robin Jarvis when I was a teenager. I enjoy Stephen King but haven't really got into the Gunslinger/Dark Tower ones. I also like post-apocalyptic/slightly futuristic fiction such as Marcel Theroux's Far North, The Handmaiden's Tale and similar (LOVED Cloud Atlas!)

Aside from this kind of (vague) genre I also love Hilary Mantel, Barbara Kingsolver, William Boyd, escapist detective stuff such as Barbara Cleverley, Agatha Christie etc, and non-fiction such as Jon Ronson and Bill Bryson.

I just fancy something else a bit Game of Thrones-esque. I tried the first Robin Hobb Farseer book but it didn't really work for me.

Any suggestions very gratefully received!

You could try 'Magician' by Raymond E Feist, it's the first of a trilogy (I think) and there are more books featuring characters that appear in this novel.

You could try Patrick Rothfuss - "The Name of the Wind" is the first one.

Or (as I always suggest) Guy Gavriel Kay - "A Song for Arbonne" is great or "The Lions of Al-Rassan" - he really gets you to care about his characters.

On a more apocalyptic theme I enjoyed "Earth Abides" by George R Stewart a while ago. I assume you've read the Hunger Games trilogy.

Try The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan. It's a monster though, there are 14 books!

Alternatively try Tad Williams. I also recommend Raymond E. Feist, Magician is a good one to start with although actually my introduction to that world was Daughter of the Empire co written with Janny Wurts.

BRILLIANT, thanks everyone! I've downloaded samples of all the above onto my Kindle and am halfway through the Lions of Al-Rassan, and loving it :)

I second anything by Tad Williams - particularly Otherland or the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn trilogy.

I've just downloaded The Iron King apparently ASOIAF was inspired by it.

Just finished the Lions of Al-Rassan and would heartily recommend it. A true, Grouching, that he reply gets you to care about his characters!

All start on Tad Williams next and then maybe The Iron King :)
