Basically that really!

Just read The Road.

I'm not into Zombies/alien type things.

I've never read anything post apocalypse so would be I retested to read other things.

Would prefer to download to my kindle.

Thank you.

I liked Oryx & Crake, and The Year of the Flood, both by Margaret Attwood.

Cripes, you want more? That one stays in the freezer for me. Have you tried On The Beach by Nevil Shute? There's also a weird short story called Pontypool Changes Everything that is very different but completely intrigued me.

I've just read Then by Julie Myerson, was very very bleak but similar to The Road, I thought.

The absolute bestest bestest post apocalyptic book is The Stand by Stephen King. I'm jealous of anyone who hasn't read it, as they have it all to come for the first time.

I was also thinking of King's The Stand. But its about 1000 pages and you may /may not be up for such a long haul?

Post-apocalyptic stories - is there some way you can run a search on Amazon or wiki to find a list maybe?

One classic I love is John Wyndham's The Chrysalids. First read it when I was 13 and it has always stayed with me. Re-read in my 30s and it didn't disappoint.

Whatever you do, don't read On The Beach. You will hate the genre all your life.

Wool could be interesting for you. It is post-apocalyptic and interesting although I wouldn't say it's anywhere near the best sci-fi I've ever read.

I didn't like, 'Then' as I thought it was very irritatingly written. I hate it when writers clearly think they are being really clever and actually they are just seeming smug and are not terribly good.

The Stand is brilliant. You could also try King's Running Man and The Long Walk. The Long Walk is really good and pre-empts the Hunger Games series (the 1st of this is ok but the others are ridiculous).

You might try The Handmaid's Tale - it's dystopian rather than post-apocalyptic but it's much better than Oryx And Crake imho.

Must admit I get nowhere near as irritated by 'On The Beach' as Cote does. I rather like it. One that irritated me was,'The Death Of Grass' by Christopher somebody iirc.

Wyndham is an easy read and they are quite good fun.

I like The Passage but lots of people don't and it's vampires so might be considered along with zombies. A decent zombie one is 'World War Z.' Another v silly one which is also zombies is 'Feed' by Myra Grant. V silly but rather good fun.

If you don't mind young adult, the Mortal Engines series by Philip Reeves is good, as is The Silver Child series by Cliff McNeish (sp?).

I Am legend? it's okay - not great.

I've just read the Passage too. The vampires aren't twilighty though, more predator/animalistic.

Absolutely. And the ones that still have a bit of human left are both scary and sad.

You might like to try Portrait of the Mother as a Young Woman by FRIEDRICH CHRISTIAN DELIUS, set in Rome during WW2. It is written in a very similar style to The Road www.tripfiction.com/Book/2248
It is published by Peirene Press who we just recently discovered who have a lovely strapline: "Two-hour books to be devoured in a single sitting: literary cinema for those fatigued by film." Times Literary Supplement

Hope that helps.

Complete nonsense about "On The Beach". It in no way put me off the genre.

Thank you all.

Am reading the road for a second time before downloading a new book.

Re The Road...is it a nuclear thing that happened or a meteor. It doesn't say does it. Unless I'm missing it again.

Loved, loved, loved The Road! Read more Cormack McCarthy-- No Country for Old Men for example. Different theme, but part of the magic of Road is the way he writes. All the Pretty Horses good too.

On The Beach almost put me off books in general, let alone just sci-fi as a genre. So incredibly idiotic were its dialogues. Towards the end, I was just wishing that all those morons would just hurry up and die.
