To my shame, just realized have never read any Angela Carter,so decided to pick one of her novels for my next book-group choice. Any suggestions?

Some people like the early stuff - very Gothic fairytale - such as The Magic Toyshop and some like the late stuff where it's also rollicking, for want of a better word. I love Wise Children. It's all good though Smile

Bloody chamber might be good for a book group. Lots of re-envisaged fairy tales with a gothic and feminist twist. Interesting and varied. Accessible too.

I think you can't really go wrong with AC. I have a particular fondness for The Magic Toyshop because I read it as a young teenager, and it's set in Crystal Palace where I grew up.

I've got The Bloody Chamber too - it will be my first Angela Carter book. Waiting for the right time to read it :)

Wise Children is my all-time favourite Carter. It's so beautiful and humane but so funny at the same time. Plus it's got a lot of Shakespearean tropes in it, which always sells me on pretty much any book (as long as they're coupled with rude similes for willies, which this book also has).

We read Heroes and Villains as a counterpoint to The Hunger Games which worked reasonably well.

Nights at the circus is wonderful, magic realism, thinking of that for my book group, have not read Wise Children in a long time.
