Books to take in while waiting for induction

The first time I was induced I took in two books. Well, that was 24 hours taken care of, pity about the next five days/
The second time I took in "We Need To Talk About Kevin". Yep, that was a mistake.
Fourth possible induction on horizon, have stockpiled two Chalet Schools, "The Night Circus" and have cracked and am reading "Boy with a Top Knot" early.

So, any recommendations? I like fiction that's not chick lit or misery memoirs, like pretty much most non fiction especially travel. Loathe fantasy and sci fi.

I reckon you need something gripping, given that you will have a lot on your mind! Have you read Gone, Girl? or Before I Go to Sleep?
