This is the new home of this thread which has now died as none of the active particpants want to operate behind the new local barrier.

For any newbies - we are meeting usually on the last monday of each month (plus or minus a week depending on other things going on). The dates of our next 2 meetings were fixed last time we met but I am not 100% sure of them, hopefully one of the others will be along in a moment to confirm them. Venues are variable and we take it in turns whether they are north or south of the river so everyone has occasions when the meeting is nearer to them.

We are deciding the books 2 months in advance to give ourselves plenty of time to find a copy and read it. We decide which book to schedule by concensus at the end of each meeting - anyone can suggest one.

Our next meeting will be at the end of November and we are reading "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" by Philip K Dick

The next meeting (which will be in mid January) will be looking at "The Magicians" by Lev Grossman.

The date for death of bees is so far in advance because it's due out in paperback in March. The conversation went something along the lines of
- This looks good lets do it
- but it's only available in hardback
- it's due out in paperback in March let's arrange to have it soon after that
- ok what shall we read till then
... which is why we ended up choosing 3 books.

I've pre-ordered it from the book depository for £5.99 with free delivery. Sainsburys is also offering it for that price with free delivery - other vendors slightly more.

I've ordered it from

... and oops I really don't have the hang of this name changing thing do I - I really need to just pick on name and stick to it.

Just finished Lightning Rods - how's everyone else doing?

exexpat Tue 05-Feb-13 10:53:45

I was going to lend Lamazeroo my copy of Lightning Rods, but apparently she's got her own on the way, so would anyone else like to borrow mine? Not a difficult read, so you've got plenty of time before book group to read it.

Spero Tue 05-Feb-13 10:55:43

Just finished the Magicians! it was ace. If I aim to be permanently one book behind I think this will add a certain je ne sais quois to our group.

exexpat Tue 05-Feb-13 12:30:06

So I can't tempt you with a slightly-used copy of Lightning Rods then, Spero? Possibly slightly more intellectually challenging than lying on the sofa binging on DVD box-sets, but only slightly.

Spero Tue 05-Feb-13 12:55:11

You surely can, how may I best effect hand over of said oeuvre?

MrsWembley Tue 05-Feb-13 21:25:56

Bearing in mind the topic of said novel, surely 'slightly-used' is a tad... urm... eewww?

exexpat Tue 05-Feb-13 22:12:05

Possibly. Or maybe I should be offering a pre-read copy of Proust in the original French (have you read that far yet?).

MrsWembley Tue 05-Feb-13 22:32:55

Nooooo, but I can't wait!!grin

QueenofWhatever Thu 07-Feb-13 19:49:01

I've got Lightning Rods on my kindle now and am about 20% through. Can't say I'm loving it yet but I'll stick with it.

exexpat Thu 07-Feb-13 20:01:24

Don't worry, you're welcome to come and slag it off - I suggested that one because I thought it might be a bit controversial. It gets a bit boring if we only read books everyone loves...

MrsWembley Fri 15-Feb-13 19:14:08

Can I just say, thank-you for recommending it! It is not a book I would have picked up myself, but I am loving it.grin

Looking forward to the meet-up.wink

maindoors Tue 19-Feb-13 14:18:03

Hello! Can I play too please?

Have been thinking for a while that I would really like to do the Bookclub thing and here you are. I rarely manage a night out and spend far too many slouched on the sofa watching rubbish TV or spodding. Your next meeting is pretty soon though and I am not too sure if I will manage to get the book and read it in time.
Lamazearoo - Think I might know you in Real Life!! After all how many Ozzies are there in Bristol with non sleeping babies?

MrsWembley Tue 19-Feb-13 22:52:22

Hello maindoors, I'm sure if you managed to pick up the book in the next couple of days you could finish it in time, if you put your mind to it! I've just finished it and it's bloody marvellous. A good, easy read and very, very funny!grin

Lamazeroo Wed 20-Feb-13 19:00:08

Ooh who are you then? Send me a hint!

Lamazeroo Wed 20-Feb-13 19:19:09

Ah just worked it out (thank you Advanced Search). Do you know, I meant to tell you about this group the last time we met up, think you'd love it. Come along on Monday smile

exexpat Wed 20-Feb-13 20:43:00

Maindoors, I think even if you come along not having read the book, you are unlikely to be the only one - have we ever had a meeting where everyone had read the entire book? So you'd be very welcome to come along and size us up say hello.

slightlysoupstained Wed 20-Feb-13 21:23:02

Can I come too please? Only I don't think I can make it on Monday, is there one planned in March? (Could only find alternate months & venues listed earlier in the thread.)

exexpat Wed 20-Feb-13 21:29:21

There isn't one in late March because of Easter holidays etc, so it's in early April instead. I think that's the one we're reading Salmon Fishing in the Yemen for. Newbies welcome.

MrsWembley Thu 21-Feb-13 07:45:27

Yep, Salmon Fishing. I'm about to order my copy...

<wanders off feeling pleased with myself at finally being a book in hand>

slightlysoupstained Thu 21-Feb-13 09:13:31

Ahh, okay - thanks. I guess that gives me a little longer to read the book. (DS is terrifically attracted by books at the mo so I can only read when he's asleep or he will try to eat it).

Lamazeroo Sun 24-Feb-13 20:10:30

Advanced warning: my poor little boy is feeling very unwell today (bloody teeth) and hasn't shifted off the boob all day. If this continues tomorrow I just won't be able to make it, as he only wants me and can't be settled by his dad. Fingers crossed he improves but I fear I may have to miss another looked forward to evening sad

MrsWembley Sun 24-Feb-13 22:27:17

Crossing my fingers for you!

Spero Mon 25-Feb-13 12:35:25

Sorry, I am currently feeling bleuuuuurg so I don't think I can make it tonight.
