As it's nearly Halloween I'm reading a horror book. Anyone else?

F G Cottam is one of my favourite authors and I really loved the Colony. I don't think he's topped the House of Lost Souls for scares but all in all I think it's a better put together book.
I'm reading Witch Hunt by Syd Moore at the moment and loving it also. Both writers able to scare one witless without resorting to blood and guts or the bizarre and desperate approach of James Herbert's latest, Ash. Bought it for 20p and still felt cheated.

Feel mean now. I think that James Herbert has written some brilliant and scary books but Ash just seemed a bit tawdry.

I will dig out my MR James book of stories to read at this time of year.

Yes to MR James! There is something of the MR James in FG Cottam, I always think.

I love a good spooky book at this time of year! We're going away tomorrow for a week in a caravan, I'm taking 'In a Glass Darkly' by Sheridan Le Fanu with me. I can't wait to be snuggled up in a blanket, reading with a big mug of hot chocolate.

I like the sound of The Colony, it's a bargain as well, may have to download it for 99p!

smile what happened to 'I'm not actually scared yet'?!

HerBigChance Sun 28-Oct-12 18:40:32

MR James does tinker with your imagination a bit...

PersonalClown Sun 28-Oct-12 18:43:03

Nope I'm reading serial killer stuff.
Much more freaky when you know that it is all real!

(The psychology/sociology fascinates me)

I just finished Peter Straub's A dark Matter. What a disappointment that was!

I will try Cottam as i love MR James.

I thought 'The House Of Lost Souls' was terrible - cliched and silly and about as scary as a Teletubbie.

Hadn't realised that Herbert was still churning 'em ouT.

I've just re-read King's 'The Long Walk' - now that IS scary!

I don't read a lot of horror, but Dark Matter caught my eye on the way to Thailand this year. Spooky spooky SPOOKY!

Am hoping that the ending of 'ash' is worth keeping going. I am sooo bored with it. An i usually love mr herbert!

tiggy114 Sun 28-Oct-12 20:32:48

Oh if someones looking for a not too scary but weird and dark read, i'd go with roald dahls short stories. Excellent.

Today's kindle daily deal is Susan Hill's The Small Hand, if anyone's interested.

Just bought the Small Hand, thanks!
Tiggy, Ash just gets worse. The word ludicrous springs to mind. Shame.

It's good, isn't it? I only discovered him fairly recently but have devoured everything he's written. Brodmaw Bay was excellent too. Still enjoying Witch Hunt very much but I think we need to talk more about Ash!

H.P. Lovecraft all the way!

ImInLoveWithAGermanPornStar Mon 29-Oct-12 18:25:45

What is it with horror writers and two initials followed by surname? F G Cottam, M R James, H P Lovecraft.

loads of other genres do it too, J. K. Rowling, maybe tis just a writer thing...
