What we're reading

Life of Pi....shall I persevere with it?

DP read this and said it was great so I started reading it and was quite enjoying it initially but now I'm finding it a bit dull TBH (I'm at the bit thats all about the religions).

I never used to give up on books ever but a few years ago I realised that there's no point in wasting your life reading something you really are not enjoying. However I keep hearing that this book is so good that I don't want to miss out.

Shall I keep going or not?

Oo yes. The start - in fact a lot of the first half! -nearly put me off but it gets so so much better. Persevere!

Yes! Its amazing! It turned my head completely. I too was a bit meh whilst reading the first half of the book. But it blew my mind at the end. Really did!

I didn't persevere CroissantNeuf I had the same reaction to you. This thread has inspired me to go and dig it out again though. Thanks you other readers.

I gave up with it so can't answer whether its worth persevering with.

Ah. I persevered, and really did not like it at all. Neither did the majority of my book group!

I really enjoyed it and recommended it to DH who hated it. Wink

I found the bit where he was lost in the boat quite harrowing, and gave up, but I was pregnant at the time I was reading it, so may have been more sensitive than usual.

The end is shit.

The rest was good.

Maybe give up just before the end.

I loved it until the end which really disappointed me.

Did you?! What did you love about it?

I think I like the ambiguity...was going to write more but thought it might spoil it! It's made me want to read it again actually. Bt maybe only the second half.

I gave up after about 50 pages. The writing style wasn't grabbing me.

Mixed feelings about it then!

I think I'll carry on, at least for a bit longer.

Thanks for your replies. Its reassuring to know that others have struggled with it a bit too.

Get at least to the bit where he's on the boat with the animals. It is a lot better than the first half. You could always skip to that bit! I'm a terrible reading cheat.

persevere - i thought it was brilliant.

i thought the beginning was brilliant too.

there was a bit of a weird bit towards the end...but on the whole a stonkingly good read.

and anyway, the only thing worse than a bad book, is a bad book you don't know the ending of.

Falls into the category of 'time I'll never get back' for me.

Are we all helping?

After I finished the book I felt very disappointed, and felt I'd wasted a lot of time reading it. However, the end does make you think (but still can't make my mind up about it)

CroissantNeuf · 11/10/2011 19:38

I'll probably return with my verdict when I give up again I finish reading it.

(but don't hold your breath as it may take some time!)
