I had a Kindle for my birthday and I'm looking to get a new book to read (I've downloaded loads of free ones and samples of ones I fancy). I like Mavis Cheek, India Knight, Nicola Upson, Agatha Christie. I don't like horror/misery lit/depressing stuff like The Room (haven't read it but don't like the thought of it).
Any great fiction you'd recommend for me?

I love Mavis Cheek and find Barbara Trapido along the same lines. Rafaella Barker is in the same carriage as India Knight IMHO.

Dorothy L Sayers if you like AC . Barbara Pym? Angela Huth?

Have you tried any Jonathan Coe or Tom Perotta? I have read all they have written and love it all and recommend them to anyone who asks Smile

If you like Mavis Cheek, have you tried Laurie Graham? Her 'fictionalised' versions of history, like the Kennedys (The Importance of Being Kennedy) and the Abdication (Gone with the Windsors) are very witty; her own line in Northern-set gentle humour is also excellent.

(I am not Laurie Graham.)

Well The Room isn't depressing, miserable or horrific really. It's fascinating and compelling.

Anyway, what about The Help - Kathryn Stockett. Three characters (two black, one white) brought together against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Era in Mississippi. Really easy to read, great dialogue, great plot and characters.
