I have not seen a thread about this book already, apologies if it has been covered.

I finished this book this morning, it is one of the best, most moving books I have read in a very long time. I LOVED it. Want to re-read it immediately.

Has anyone else read it? What did you think of it?

I loved it too. The maid's actions in saving the collection were beyond belief. I don't think he explained how she managed not to be detected and whether she was rewarded for her loyalty. That whole scene of visiting Vienna was so moving, without being mawkish. It reminded me of Stephen Fry's episode of Who Do You Think You Are, when he walked the streets from which his ancestors had been taken.

nooooo, I didn't think any of it was boring!! I loved every single word, I think his writing is exceptional - he conveys such depth of emotion without ever veering into cpnjecture or mawkishness. Justagirl..I think he was very honest in saying that he regretted how little he could find out about the maid afterwards? Did you see that his own daughter is called Anna [sad smile]

Think I am going to read it again - am MAKING dh read it now Grin

wow, I find it incredible that there is such a range of reactions to this book as I didn't find it smug at all, quite the opposite in fact! Stick with it, It is an unbelievable story really. And quite shocking.

I am still thinking about it. Would you really not find it incredible to discover that that was your family history?????

I think a lot of the reviews found it worthy but rather inward focussed. The beginning section was far too long and esoteric.

oh dear, wish I'd kept it now, took it on holiday and found the first few chapters so pretentious and boring left it there! Maybe should have persevered but openeing really hard going.

I have it on my TBR pile. Will give it a go next. Will persevere if I don't enjoy the start Smile
