Calling all Walkers !!

I am approximately 2 1/2 stone overweight, very very unfit and want to start walking to build up my fitness/lose weight. I have today managed a 40 minute walk round the park in my lunch hour. My pace is not very fast but dont think I could go any faster at the moment!!

Can any experienced walkers or people who want to join me - post their tips etc.

Also a couple of questions I am wearing trainers that I originally got for running in - not seen much action must say and they are pretty comfortable but was wondering what the experienced walker preferred ie. brand/model etc. Also socks are there any better than others.

I look forawrd to hearing from you all

I did the Moonwalk last year and we trained hard, walking further / faster each week to manage the full 26.2miles, gulp!

I definitely recommend that you walk every lunchtime for as long as possible, and as far as possible till you get your fitness up to scratch. A pedometer is useful for monitoring your progress too.

I just wear normal trainers (cross-trainers?) with nicely cushioned soles, and any socks, but if you get up to doing really long distances, you can get special running socks that stop blisters.

We are still walking 10miles together once a week, and I walk everywhere, as fast as possible

Hi

I do tons of walking and I think that hard wearing and supportive shoes and important.

Trainers are fine, especially if you progress to power walking

I bought a pair of merrill shoes which were great as I kept wearing out normal trainers too fast so actually worked out cost wise better for me.

normal socks are fine for me as I tend to be walking places rather than walking for exercise itself if you see what I mean? I have some of those double layer running socks that I wear for running and they are great but I would think that any comfortable socks would be ok.
