Slimfast....has anyone had any sucess or is it just stupid?

Hi

I cannot get into most of my clothes as have gained about a stone recently.

I would like to lose this stone......

Slimfast was on BOGOF so I bought two tins - a 12 day supply. I am determined to stick with it for the 12 days, exercise a bit more (am already pretty active) and then once I have finished the slimfast to try to control eating.

Has anyone had any sucess with slimfast or it is just a con?

Just stupid.

I did it 20 years ago and lost loads. Tried it again in 2007 and the weight simply did not shift - after losing 1 lb in 7 weeks, I moved on to Atkins and never looked back !

I have a screwy metabolism though.

Slimfast is probably OK as a quick fix to get you going, but I wouldn't rely on it for too long.

I had a friend who lost a stone in a month on Slimfast. She kept the weight off too because she changed her eating habits by cutting out snacking, drinking more water and cutting her portion size.

If you want something to kickstart your diet change, it will work. However, if you do not change your poor eating habits that resulted in the excess weight in the first place, you will put the weight back on but that goes for any diet.

Good luck!

The thing is that for giving up the food etc it isn't really much difference thatn other meal replacement diets. And now with slimfast there are ready meals and snacks to help you. My mum used it a few times and lost weight but poor eating habits always put it back on, my sister did the same on the cambridge diet becuase she never worked at amintaining the weight once it was off so the same would apply here I guess.
I might try it myself actually where was it BOGOF??

That is the thing with diets. You have to be prepared to change your eating habits to maintain the success.

Do you know that Harvey, the marine fitness trainer from Celebrity Fit Club drinks Slim Fast when he has not got time to prepare a meal? If it good enough for him......

beaniebaby25 · 30/06/2009 15:21

ooh yes definitely, providing it's not too expensive otherwise I won't be able to do it. Will investigate tonight

Have you ever tried the shakes? Do you do 'a shake for breakfast, a shake for lunch and a balanced dinner'? That's all I remember from the ads... i'll have to steer clear from the snack bars etc as once i start snacking i can't stop.

It's on BOGOF in sainsburys - two tins of powder for £4.99.

I am just doing the milkshake for breakfast and for lunch then a meal in the evening and trying not to snack at all.

Didn;t get any of the other stuff as did seem quite expensive. My theory was that the fiver I spent on the powder, plus the gallons of skimmed milk will still work out cheaper than 12 actual meals.

Just want to do it for a kick start for the first two weeks so that I feel I am getting somewhere, then stick to watching what I eat more than I usually do.

My weight crept back up this year and I want it back to normal, which for me is about 70kg (am 175cm), I ate healthily but just too much I think and am v bad at doing really well all day then eating more in the evenings so need to watch that. On a diet I end up in bed by 9 just to stop self eating!

I have been on it for 6 weeks now and have lost 13lbs. I find it really easy in the morning and at lunchtime when I don't have time to calorie count!! I have also drastically cut down on carbs though and exercise 5 days a week but I have lost two dress sizes on it and feel quite well. I do a lot of weights at the gym and that is probably why my weight has not gone down as much as it could have!! I eat a lot of fruit, raw veg and cottage cheese during the day as well as a meal such as omlette and salad for dinner.

I really like it although it is full of artificial crap but am using it as tool and it's working for me.

Wilkinsons have a special offer of 6 pre-mixed drinks for 3.49 (I prefer those to the powder) and 3 bars for 1.97 (choc crunch my fav!) which is the cheapest I have seen anywhere else.

I started this yesterday. Going well so far. I really like my food, but I find the milkshakes are quite nice, especially the vanilla one. It also takes away the hassle of choosing something healthy for breakfast and lunch. I'm still snacking, I bought an Easiyo maker so I'm having low-fat yoghurt with some raisins or cherries in the morning, then a caramel rice cake with my lunch time shake. In training for a 5k fun run in october too. Doing well with that as well, although only on week 2. Very positive so far! Good luck to all.

Are the powders easy to make up, or is it worth paying the extra for the pre-made bottles? I'm going to Sainsburys after work to grab some BOGOF and am leaning towards the powder... then i can leave one tin at home and one at work.

And also which are the best flavours?

I'm looking forward to trying it!

Beanie - when I use the powders they always turn out with small lumps even when I use a blender or shake bottle (and that has to be washed up of course - lazy emoticon!). I find the bottles are thicker and more satisfying and worth paying extra for as that's all I'm having for a meal! They also don't have the dreaded aspartame in which the tins had last time I looked?? Try the bars as well as they feel like a treat, I sometimes leave mine until the evening so I can look forward to a choc bar when the kids are in bed.

I like the Cafe (coffee) and Vanilla ones best.

The powders have worked quite well for me. I am using a liquidiser and adding ice and blending for ages though. Agree it is a hassle to wash out the blender each time - I;ve been really ming and just left it to soak and then rinsed it as only put my dishwasher on every second day.

Have managed three days so far with NO snacking at all and being really strict. Am missing booze more than anything else though and is so hard not to nibble on DS's left overs (which is exactly how I put on the weight in the first place!)

ooh yum. Definitely will be getting some - although struggling to find it anywhere. Live and work in central london, the only sainsburys nearby are the 'local' (read small and rubbish) ones which hardly stock anything. There are no wilkinsons in central london either. The two large Boots near me don't stock it either! will have to walk two miles out of my way home tonight to find a big sainsburys at Whitechapel. Gah!

I'm tempted mostly by the powders, in that I'd imagine they're easier to store etc. i have three weeks until my holiday - if I got started on slim fast tomorrow and carried on right the way through, how much do you think i could lose? I'm 9stone and want to get to 8.5 (Im a short 5'3)

BigMomma3 · 02/07/2009 17:29

beanie - you may well lose a lot in your first week (I lost 8lbs but am considerably larger than you!!). 9lbs should def be achievable at 3lbs a week.

I also have a big hol in 3 weeks, but I don't think I'm going to lose my excess 2 stone by then gahhhhhhh!!

ooh thanks BigMomma you've spurred me on. Whoops just noticed I appear to have hijacked this thread!

Anyway I managed to find the pre mixed bottles in a tiny boots, which I never imagined would sell it - and they were reduced to £1 per bottle.

Operation Slim Quickly starts tomorrow!

Hey guys, on day 3 of slimfast, bit headachey but I've lost 4lbs.

I did this before when I was at Uni and lost 2 stone in 8 weeks.

Just what i need to do now!!

Seriously, it's hard work and you prob won't enjoy it but it bloody well works.

I'm having 2 vanilla shakes a day (tend to have powder as it's soooooo much cheaper) plus 2 fruit based snacks and evening meal is soup and salad plus a kit kat (it's what i need to keep me going all day!!)

Drink loads of water and focus on the goal. That's what I'm doing.#

Good luck!

hi guaranagal

thanks for your tips, that sounds manageable. I started a new thread in this topic, but no one has answered it yet - I had a question ...

I really like my weetabix in the morning. If I continue to have this before I leave for work, then have a shake around 10am can I write my weetabix off as a ?snack? but just the other way round? Then have a shake for my lunch at around 2pm? Then a break of maybe fruit about 4 and then a 600 cal dinner. Will this still work?

I had weetabix this morning but have not had anything else. I have two shakes in the fridge - do i have both staggered, or just have one for lunch and that's it?
