OK, my ds was born a year ago. I didn't get very big whilst I was pregnant but had quite a big baby (8lbs 10oz). I am back to the weight I was before pregnancy but I wasn't happy being this weight in the first place so not satisfied and seriously have no body confidence!

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be a size zero or anything, could never be less than a 12 as my hips and shoulders are broad. I am 5"8 and currently weigh exactly 13 stone which classes me as over weight with a BMI of 28. I'd like to get down to 11 stone which would give me a far healthier BMI of 23.

Trouble is, I have no idea where to begin. This last week i have been cutting out the crao (eg fried stuff, snacks Buger King etc!) and have been eating veg and drinking fruit smoothies. Haven't been weighed yet so not sure if it's working but I do feel better.

The problem is I'm bloody starving!!! I think about food constantly although I don't want to eat it as I really want to look and feel healthier.

Is it true that no diet ever works? If I start eating normal amounts again (minus the burger king and snickers bars) will I just put it all back on again?

I went on a diet 2 years ago with a starting weight of 12lbs 12oz, got down to 11st 4lbs and felt much better, problem is, I got lazy and soon headed back to burger king and ate just for the sake of eating. It's time to STOP!!! I am 24 and my body makes me feel crap sometimes. I don't want to be skinny but surely there is a way to shift the blubber round my legs???? My waist is fine, that's the nnoying thing, my waist is a size 12 but my arse and legs are at least a 16 so i look completely out of proportion and struggle to get clothes to fit well. The waist on all my jeans is massive on me but the legs are bulging at the seams. I just want to be in proportion. Any ideas? Any good excercises or simple diets where I won't fantasise about cooking our dog and eating him as I'm so hungry??!

Ok

Here is how I've lost 3 and a half stones since January:

Small plate
Low carb - no bread/potato/wheat, plenty of protein - lean meat/eggs
Lots of salad
Reduce fruit - a lot of sugar in fruit
Semi-skimmed milk
DRINK WATER

If you feel hungry, have a glass of water, wait 20 minutes. If still hungry have another glass of water, wait 20 minutes. If you are still hungry, then eat.

Oh I may well jump on your bandwagon, if thats OK. I have 2 stone to lose (was almost 12, and substantially shorter than you!). I started last week but am cheating as still bf one year old

I've lost weight successfully with Weightwatchers which I love but with no daytime meetings to hand, can't really do it.

My strategy so far is to have a good hearty breakfast which includes protein (today was a bagel with peanut butter), egg and toast is good, cereal with skimmed milk, and porridge is great but I don't fancy it on a hot day much.

Aim for the least processed food as possible, wholemeal bread, brown rice, it has more fibre so more satisfying.

Keep carrot sticks in the fridge. Everytime I open the fridge door I'd grab something I didn't really need, so have substituted for veg.

Smoothies, I'm afraid, are full of sugar even if you make them with tonnes of fruit it condenses all the fructose into one glass. Much better to eat the fruit.

But my key to it is writing everything that passes my lips down. I have a chart on the cupboard, in full view. Yes I am a saddo, but I am serious about it (this time!). I even refused a chocolate yesterday !

Yes I gathered the fruit smoothies werent the best idea but I just never fancy fruit! I just love veges, the only fruit I actually love is strawberries but tend to mother them with cream which negates the whole point of eating them! I quite like apples but only once I've put them in the micro wave so they are all warm and squidgey, I'm odd I know!!!

Well done Boysarelikedogs, 3 stone is a good amount of weight to lose, you should be very proud!!! Congratulations. Do you feel healthier? Dp you have much more to lose or are you where you want to be now?

Anyway, well done on refusing the choccy Foxy, I have been very good and refused an ice cream today! Very unlike me!

I love wholemeal bread, never eat white bread.

Could easily do poached egg on toast for breakfast which would be good.

Me and dh are BIG pasta fans too which isn't good as I have massive square plates which I tend to pile up! We love hommade spicey tomato and bacon pasta so will have to cut this out although dh is a skinny mini so he can eat whaer he likes !

Good idea about writing it down, I think often that has been my problem in the past. i tend to still think I'm hungry cos I'm bored but if I actually logged what I'd eaten I'd have a better idea of what nutriens and calories I'd actually eaten.

I just love everything unhealthy really. i like my veges but tend also love mash potato with lots of butter and I also snack far too much, often stupid choclatey things that don't fill me up but have LOADS of calories in. I find that I snack for the sake of it, just cos we have some nice biscuits in the cupboard, i convince myself I'm hungry!

Thanks for the replies!

No potato, no chocolate, no alcohol.

Seems harsh, but I am such an all or nothing person IYSWIM, can't have just one square of chocolate so am better off not having any.

It's because I am in the right frame of mind

Really pleased for you! What a good success story?! Does this mean that you will never be able to eat potato or chocolate agin? Alcohol I don't drink anyway but I would miss potato!

Fry-lite (spray olive oil thingy) is great. About one calorie a spray.

Ah yes, i used that last time when i lost the weight, I forgot about that, thanks!

My worry is i'll do the same again though and lose the weight but put it all back on again. That makes me not want to bother!

listen i could tell you horror stories of burger king and you wouldn't eat another one, every diet works if you stick to it, its all in your mind, you need to be able to control yourself over what you eat. Yes you will be hungry but it doesn't mean you need to eat, have a glass of water instead to fill you up, an apple a yoghurt the list goes on. Your body will crave the foods its used to, your mind will crave the food your used to, you need to change your way of thinking and wanting.

If you see a D&G handbag at £200 and you want it do you run in to the shop and buy it? NO(well maybe if your loaded) but if you pass burgerking and see a chicken royal at 2.99 you want it YES. no1 is because you can afford it and no2 you like it, treat it like the handbag, yes its nice but not only does it cost you loads(adding up all burgerking meals you have ever had)but it costs your lifestyle it sits on your hips sends your colestrol levels up and makes you heavy and unhappy.

The first few days of a diet are the hardest but sticking to it gives you control over yourself and eating habits and the results follow, forget the hunger pangs if you have had breakfast lunch and dinner theres no need for anything else except plenty of fluids, its amazing how many people don't drink enough fluids to keep them going throughout the day.

I lost over two stone last time, half a stone crept back on, but that was fine. I kind of set my goal for lower than I can maintain IYSWIM. So I got to 9.10, but was happy at 10.7. Then I got pregnant again.

I find being slightly obsessive helps . Cook everything from scratch. We had burgers last night (in homemade bread and everything ) and they were lush

Yes Mawma! That's exactly it. Its a quick-fix 'treat' which isn't really a treat at all.

My problem is that DP is away a lot, and I'm on my own with 4 DCs. So, I look forward to a 'treat' in the evening (which is usually a lovely dinner and a pudding). Now I have to find something else. He is away for about 2 months as of next week.

And water when you are hungry is a top tip.

Yum, the burgers sound delicious! Ooo I'm hungry! I have no problem with being obsessive! If I don't obsess about my diet, i'll only find something else to obsess over! lol.

I'd love to be able to get down to 10stone 5ish but not sure if that's do-able! For now I just have to concentrate on one pund at a time otherwise I'll get too overwhelmed and think I can't do it!

YOU DID VERY WELL TO LOSE ALL THAT WEIGHT, HOW DID YOU MANAGE IT??!

my best tip is to have some nuts in the eve or a yoghurt stops all the cupboard raking, poor you fox i don't know what i'd do if my dh worked away, maybe i'd be 5stone heavier if he didn't keep me entertained

Mawma, yes I see your point. I think that is the problem, my only hobby was food! I always wonder if when I feel hungry, I'm doing more harm than good by just ignoring my body. Obviously my body doesn't need Burger king, that's my mind which I need to sort out and get through the cravings!

my hobby is food i love food, enjoying food is a good hobby, i just found that learning what was in food helped me to learn how to cook easy meals that were healthy, we all pig out at times and carry a few too many pounds at the weekend but controling our minds lets us get back on track during the week, if your new to dieting allow yourself one small treat everyday then turn it into every week, my every day treats were a choice from: 2 jaffa cakes, rasins,pk crisps, kitkat then when you have mastered sticking to one treat a day while enjoying a healthy bfast lunch and dinner you can have a healthy week with a bottle of wine and nibbles at the weekend

Nuts, like oily fish and avocados are all high in fat, but GOOD fat, so if you hear they are bad diet food, they aren't really. They will be satisfying for longer, and nutritious. Everything in moderation.
