how does GI work?

misdee - have a look at the "GI - anyone got any tips" thread. There's a link to the Sunday Times supplement which gives an overview.

Well done hmb! I'm just a week in and have lost 2kg. I'm really surprised as to how easy it's been. I love not feeling quite so shoehorned into my jeans.

Lots o v healthy stuff. It is based on using compex carbs that take time to break down so you don't get a rush of sugar and then a desire to eat. Half of what you eat at each meal should be fruit and/or veg a quarter lean protien and a quarter compec carbs. It is great and so filling!

PTMD and HMB - What did you think of today's recipes in The Sunday Times? I can't believe a one egg omelette would look that good! Are they using teeny tiny plates? My bowl of muesli (weighed of course) only just covers the bottom of the bowl too. Was it one of you who made the bara brith last week? What was it like?

I am easing my way in to this food plan but, unlike HMB I do find myself being hungry (have more than 3 snacks but stick to fruit or oatcake). I need to work out menus for a week and convince DH that I am merely experimenting. Loads of sausages in freezer to use up though...

Congrats to all of you this week.

I really like the look of the bacon soup - will definitely make that this week. I made the Bara Brith last week - it was lovely. I got 1 slice - dh ate the rest!

I don't stick to it rigidly yoyo, but I have a lot of weight to lose (another 3 to 4 stone), so I snack on fruit a lot when I get the munchies or I have a bowl of "emergency" veg soup. I bought some special bags (from Tesco I think) that you can freeze and store things like soup in.

im gonna have to give it some serious thought

There's a few threads here in the weightloss threads. Have a look through, you'll find links to recommended books and the stuff in the Sunday Times which has lovely recipes.

PTMD - I think it's best not to be too rigid anyway because that way you're more likely to stick with it. You're doing really well though. I think I mentioned on another thread that it isn't so much losing the weight that is important to me but more that I eat more healthily and hopefully have more energy. I am going to try out some of this week's recipes despite the glut of sausages!!

I am now 3.5 weeks into this and I have lost 10.5 pounds. This is the best that I have ever managed, and I am lighter now than I have been for over 5 years!

I am still finding it easy to do, I have slipped once or twice, but nothing drastic. How is everyone elso on the GI diet?

Blimey, that's impressive hmb, might have to switch to this diet. Will go and look now.

wwww (lol the extra w btw)

It is bloody magic! I am eating loads, and not feeling hungry. It is also very healthy, masses of fruit and veg. I bought 2 books for £10 from whsmiths. One gives a 2 week diet plan, with all three meals and snacks planned, the other gives extra recipies. Dh and I are both doing it. Tonight for example we have tuna with a fresh tomato and pepper salsa with mange tout and new potatoes!

I'm feeling good on it!

Well done hmb!

I stayed the same this week - had a HUGE meal plus boozy night out on Friday which I think contributed.

Still, overall, I've been doing GI for a while now and am really happy with the weight I've been losing since I started in the Summer.

I think all the recipes in the Sunday Times look yummy. I have made the mushroom and bacon soup and god is it good. I am doing the pork fillet thing tonight and as tomorrow is my day off I am making the blueberry muffins with fructose instead of sugar.

I need savoury, nutritous snacks though!!! I have just eated 5 wholemeal crackers smeared with chilli sauce to sate my spicy/savoury craving. Not sure what i should have in the house to feed it - I never crave sweet things, only savoury

Enid, marmite rice cakes? They're 31 cal each

Report
happymerryberries · 25/01/2005 20:18

Rice cakes are very high GI, all rice is iffy and white rice most of all. I have been having crudites with low fat humus or tzaziki. That is quite filling and low in calories and GI (and dare I say it nicer than rice cakes which always seem like eating polystyrine to me }

Well done HMB - I think that when (if) I get to my target weight GI will be the way for me to keep my weight stable.

Enid - snap. Tomorrow is also my day off and I often make muffins on a Wednesday, but tomorrow I was planning to make blueberry muffins with the fruit sugar that came in the post yesterday. Did you manage to get it in a rl shop? My Waitrose didn't stock it and I had to order it from an on-line health-food shop.

Dark rye Ryvita with a smear of houmus and cucumber is my favourite savoury snack - I don't think it will hit the spot if you're craving chili though. You could always make and freeze red lentil soup made with lots of chili, I love that.

Enid, try oatcakes with peanut butter and marmite - yummy and very savoury aswell as low GI.

I started the GI diet just over a week ago and have lost 5lb! i'm actually enjoying it and I felt extremely righteous doing my shopping today.

Made the blueberry muffins last week, yum yum, Tesco sell Fruitsana. Tried the spicy pea soup yesterday, delicious but tasted strangely of peanut butter.

I need to lose about 4 stone (by July, am I being to ambitious?), I suppose 5lb is a start.

OK, had a look at my GI book for some low GI indulgences in the savory line.

Around 50 kcal

3 table spoons of salsa with 3 celery sticks or
15 olives or
5 almonds
or a vegetable plate
2 slices of lean ham 1 tomato and a little mustard

Around 100kal
2 rye crispbreads topped with 1 oz low fat humous
1 slice granery bread topped with 1 oz of tuna (in water)
3 oz chicken with 1 teaspoon of low fat salad cream and a chopped green pepper
a 10oz tim of slimmers veg soup

Hi I've been doing the GI diet for 3weeks and have lost nearly a stone . I have about another stone to go to acheive my pre-pregnancy weight. My friend recommended the diet to me,she has been doing it since Oct and has lost an impressive 4 stone!
Sainsbury's and Tesco do some fab yogurts that are fat and sugar free. They are called Irish diet yoghurts come in a pack of six and have scrummy flavours like pear & mango, peach & nectarine. They make ideal snack or are great mixed with homemade museli.
Enid..a good savory snack is dried chickpeas
2x410g of chickpeas, drained and rinsed
2tbsp of extra-virgin olive oil or rapeseed 1/2tsp salt
pinch of cayenne

Toss chickpeas in the oil, salt and cayenne. Spread them onto a large baking sheet in a single layer.
Bake them at 200 degrees(gas6), shaking the pan a couple of times during cooking for approx 45mins, or until golden. Leave to cool.
Crunchy, salty but not fatty

You can add more salt or change the spices for different flavours.

I also use splenda as my sugar substitute.

cool, thanks, will deffo be doing the chickpeas.
Bran I bought fruisiana in Tescos.
Bunny2, yum. I absolutely love peanut butter, its one of my fave foods but its incredibly fattening. I would have thought 2 oatcakes with peanut butter and marmite would be about 300 cals?

will buy more lo fat hummus and rye crispbreads today - if I add a pickled chili to that it should hit the spot. Chili junkie that I am.

Nooooo, don't use low-fat houmus, it tastes foul. A lot of the flavour of houmus comes from the olive oil so when they make low-fat houmus the olive oil and the flavour is seriously reduced and they use horrible additives to make the right texture. You won't even save that many calories, just use a thinner layer of houmus or mix it with a little low-fat natural yogurt to make it stretch further.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm a bit of a foodie and strongly feel that some things can be made low-fat and some just can't.

Those chickpeas sound fab Riebee, I can't wait to try them. Do you think that Splenda tastes like sugar, or sweet but not like sugar? I made muffins with it once and they tasted synthetic to me, I ended up throwing them away. It's a pity because it's quite a lot less calories than sugar.
