If you could just spare a few minutes I would be so grateful. I've forgotten what it's like to be slim and how much/little I ate. Can some of you possibly list how much you eat and drink in a typical day PLEASE? I need to get to grips with eating and am always hungry so wondering what a slim person eats in a typical day.

Also when you eat out does your stomach expand a dress size, what do you eat so it doesn't!

I usually forget to eat so end up having just one meal a day, but I do drink loads and loads. Don't eat out much just usually have coffee with a friend.

roller what a good question, and I am not a thin person. I have a theory that a thin person does eat, but if they eat out at one meal, they naturally cut back afterwards. So they eat salad at lunch if they are eating out in the evening. Lots of people at work seem to eat all day, but then they say when they go home they don't 'bother' to eat in the evening!! Or they have a piece (not 6) of toast, or a bowl of cereal!!

Also if they eat a chocolate bar one day, they don't eat it the next etc etc.

Also if there is an open pack of doughnuts at home, they don't see that they HAVE to be finished while they are fresh!!

crunchie that is my theory too
or they dont eat at all they just drink water and take a multivitamin

The thing is that they don't actually THINK about food all the time!! And probably say they eat loads. But if they eat one big meal in a day they don't eat a 2nd meal, unlike us chubbies!!

roller - I'm not thin either but I've got a friend who's actually desperate to put on weight! we don't mention it anymore as it's a sore point... she does eat, but as soon as she gets stressed it sort of just 'slips through the body undigested' and she looses weight no matter what she eats! Generally they (slim folk I know) say they can eat what they want, but imho they're full after an apple

I'm doing the GI diet at the mo and with all that salad and those veg am always nice and full

sorry, but would gladly finish off pack of doughnuts (hiding it from dd/ds/dh). And eat as much or more for braekfast, lunch, dinner (and do need sweetdish to finish off) as dh. And no, don't do any sports, well except running after dd/ds. And do think about chocolate etc a lot of the time as haven't got anything else to do and supposed to be good for depression (or was it bananas being good??).

I find Monica Grenfell 's principles really work, especially as regards expanding stomachs.

I'm not fat - not skinny though. I eat: 2 shredded wheat with sprinkling of cheerios for breakfast, with skimmed milk. 3 slices wholemeal bread with Flora light, slice of ham, small piece 4% fat cheese, tomato and chutney for lunch, and for dinner 1 small potato, good portion of veg and usually something like chicken breast in jar sauce/curry sauce. Low fat yogurt for pud. probiotic drink at bedtime. Sweetie/cake only at weekend. Not a weight loss diet but fairly healthy - I hope!

well im not slim, ive just had a baby, but with my last baby i lost 2 stone after i had her (2 stone over 4-5 mths), so im doing what i did last time in the hope it works again.

here goes -

basically i tend to eat same things every day. i have certain foods that i really like, and i just eat them all the time!

breakfast - 2 slices toast and marg, v low fat yoghurt and tea (no milk, i cut that out of all cups of tea)

lunch - more toast, 2 slices sometimes with cheese, or ham and low fat mayo. no butter or marg. apple or low fat yoghurt, cup of tea

tea - i make the same for all of us, i couldnt be bothered making seperate, so i have to make things that we all like, and not low fat for dd.

ie lasagne and salad, chicken and baby pots, broccoli, basically anything. pasta and sauce.
but mostly for tea we have a big pot of home-made soup and a pile of crusty bread (dd and dh's favourite) they have butter and i dont.
cup of tea

and i have a g&t every night (slimline tonic)

if i am hungry in between i have a packet of quavers or another piece of toast! and another cup of tea

if i go out to eat i only have 1 course,

I've lost quite a bit of weight over the last year, so am back to the sort of 10/12 size I was before children (save for FLAB around tummy that isn't going to go unless I exercise ... zero chance of that).

My day is:

  • start with cup of tea while racing about getting ready for school, don't really want anything else till 11ish, then have elevenses thing at work like pastry or muffin (which feels like a real treat);
  • lunch: sandwich sort of thing scoffed at desk while MNing. I eat lots more if I stop for lunch properly;
  • have bowl of apples in office for cravings during afternoon. If horrible bit of work to get through have a packet of jelly babies;
  • dinner is a bit Atkinsy, since dh is on a diet. I think that's had a knockon effect on me - don't drink much alcohol now, don't have potatoes or puddings, and so on. But it's always quite "nice" food - eg rack of lamb last night.

Key things are: I work, so food isn't always to hand & I'm usually rushing about in a bit of stress; the bowl of apples thing; dh's diet; for some reason I don't like eating after about 9 at night - just don't get hungry after that; & [heresy] I don't really like chocolate.

Does that help? To be honest I'm not sure it's all that healthy - esp the no breakfast, & that it's weight loss w/out exercise.

I used to be slim and ate like a horse! Typical intake when slim:

Brekkie - cornflakes or similar
Midmorning - sandwich (meant for lunch)
Lunch - pizza (dinner plate size), or steak & g/bread, or another sandwich & coronation chicken, followed by Waitrose Champagne & Rhubarb yoghurt
Midafternoon - crisps/choc
Dinner - something dinnery and cooked
Evening - something nibbly

Drinks: fizzy/wine/coffee

and I was size 8/10.

All fell apart when I got pregnant and I am now a heifer and eat sod all.

Yesterday
maybe 10-20 chocolates(leftover from Xmas) plus a chokkie bar. 2 Shrewsbury biscuits. Loads of coffee
3 bowls of dressed salad. Cottage cheese
3 glasses of wine.
Today so far one pack Wheat Crunchies. 2 Shrewsbury biscuits 5 chocs will have curry and wine tonight.
BUT I run at least twice a week. Took me ages to lose baby weight, was always tired and hungry bf. It was only gym and salad/protein diet that did it in the end - I could not afford new wardrobe. Now I am back to pre baby weight (sadly not figure) I seem to be able to eat more or less what I like tho I realise the above is scarcely a healthy diet. I hardly ever think about food and eat when I'm hungry (which is quite often) When I eat out for some reason I do choose the healthier options and almost never choose a big sticky pud tho.

I have put on some weight since baby and before that was a curvy 14. Up to age 25 I was size 10.

I used to eat mostly only chocolate bars and cans of coke, sometimes macdonalds or chip shop chips. Breakfast was 2 bowls of coco pops, with normal milk and that was often a snack/meal later on in day too. I very rarely ate actual meals, just snacked on cr*p all the time. didn't eat any vegetables and v. little fruit.

I really do think it is a metabolism thing. You just slow down when you get a bit older and babies often add a little extra weight that just stays.

Report
wild · 14/01/2005 13:33

agree about metabolism
don't agree it's irreversible
I find for me exercise the only way, really gruelling spurts of running to 'scare' fat away. Like 5 mins, sprint, then 10 jog etc for no more than 1/2 hour. Moderate pace exercise even swimming didn't touch it nor did diet.Depends how much you care, really

I'm skinny to the point of it being too skinny to be honest. I'm 5.9 and wear a size 8. I'd prefer to be a 10 or 12 but I find it incredibly difficult to gain weight. This isn't because of a raging metabolism but more because of a lack of appetite that I've had since I was a child. I drove my mum mad with how little I would eat and I'm the same now. I just don't 'fancy' anything in particular except for cheese and crisps, sweet black coffee and beer. Not very healthy I know. I do try to eat more but I feel kind of queasy at the thought of a lot of foods including meat and fish, cakes and chocolate. It's hard to explain it to anyone else but imagine how you felt when pregnant if you had morning sickness, you know when you just couldn't face food? I'm like that all the time.

I have to say being like me isn't enviable at all really. I'm too thin. It's not attractive. I hide my bonyness behind all the wrong kinds of clothes and frequently get referred to as anorexic.

No joy. I'd like to be a curvy size 14 and dp would prefer me to be too. He never fancied me more than immediately post-pregnancy I was almost a size 12. I looked better all over then, face, body, the lot.

wild · 14/01/2005 13:54

agree faces look better if well nourished
but clothes look better on slim bods imho
It's that face/body dilemma you reach at a certain point in life. I've gone for slim but haggard

I think slim people don't really think about what they eat. Eat when they're hungry, don't eat when not, don't have loads of crap in the house. If I have a proper meal for lunch I can quite easily not eat for the rest of the day because I am simply too full.

Report
weightwatchingwaterwitch · 14/01/2005 14:10

Cor jampots, that's enviable, that intake AND slim! Interesting question this isn't it? Remember an old diet book of mine that said 'you must try to think and eat like a slim person, watch what they eat.' Must admit, all the slim people I know do cut back the next day if they ate a lot the day before. It seems to me that in order to stay slim you really do have to think about how much you're eating a lot of the time.

Ooo, I've just disagreed with you www . I don't think about what I eat really and my weight is fairly constant and I'm not bothere about it (not atm obviously ). The flabby bits are a different issue I think.

I'm not thin (5'6" 9st 4lb) but I have maintained the same weight from 21 to 40. What would I eat in a typical day:

Breakfast: 2 slices of wholewheat toast plus mashed banana or porridge (made with water) and raisins or some fruit compote

Snack: Apple, 2x digestives or perhaps a bowl of bran flakes.

Lunch: If working from home, something left over from last night e.g. today, vegetable lasagne and bread and butter pudding, if in the office, M&S rissotto, sandwich, soup and bread plus a piece of fruit. Sometimes a business lunch but I tend to be a bit picky about what I eat at those otherwise I get indigestion and/or want to sleep all afternoon.

Snack (if hungry mid-afternoon): Dried fruit, biscuit, handful of Ritz crackers. (I doubt if I'll need anything after today's lunch!)

Still hungry?: Sometimes a Crunchie bar on the way home, if I feel like it. Or perhaps half a pitta and some hummous or a few handfuls of crisps before we get into the kids' bath and bed routines.

Dinner: Cooked meal, rarely pudding. Perhaps a few squares of chocolate. Maybe a piece of fruit. Definitely a small glass of wine.

Looking back at this I should be the size of a small house. So why aren't I? Not sure. I walk alot and don't eat if I get stressed or sad, but that's not enough of a reason. My pet theory is that I've never been pregnant (DDs are adopted) and that pregnancy can radically change one's metabolism. My other theory is that I'm in a virtuous circle: because I don't have to fight my weight, I'm very relaxed about food, never feel guilty, eat when I'm hungry, find it easy to say 'no' to food if I'm not, rarely crave anything and all that keeps my weight constant.

Issymum · 14/01/2005 14:16

Sorry, lunch in the office should have read:

M&S rissotto or sandwich or soup and bread plus a piece of fruit

Even I don't eat all of that for lunch!
