Artificial sweeteners - yay or nay?

I need to stop drinking my calories in the form of coffee with milk and sugar. I have 4-6 cups a day and struggling to give them up.

I’ve never gone the artificial sweetener road as I read years ago they were bad and just chemicals, is this still the case?

Cutting 4-6 teaspoons of sugar out a day would definitely free up some room for actual food! Blush

That a lot of sugar. Personally I am in the 'artificial sweeteners are poison' camp.

Try cutting it in half. Then half again a week.later....

find a different drink that you find palatable without sugar. coffee is naturally very bitter and if you don't enjoy the bitter taste you need sweetness to balance it out. something else like rooibos tea is a lot less bitter so needs no sugar. if your reason for drinking coffee is because of the caffeine you could always take that in the form of pro-plus pills.

Xylitol is fine in small amounts. i think the sugar is worse and sweetners lesser of 2 evils.

The chemicals in sweetner are carcinogenic. I did slimming world for years and there was a huge push on fat free food, the downside was they were full of sweetner - muller light yogurts were a main thing.

Sweetex, canderel are the brands I used. I don’t believe you have the same type of chemicals in the natural ones - stevia?

I used to have sugar in tea and found it easier to just force the change rather than wean myself off it. Took a couple of weeks and then it was fine. It's ultimately better to not have either and I would def prefer to have something that I know where it has come from than a chemical that has been made to weirdly taste like sugar but without the sugar. Gotta be wrong!!

It’s nay from me. How about replacing your current tea & coffee with green tea, which doesn’t need milk or sugar?

Thanks everyone.

I had a couple of coffees yesterday with no sugar but it just wasn’t the same.

Definitely not switching to tea, can’t stand it. Grin

I’ve given up chocolate, white bread, fast food, everything I really really enjoy. Sadly I feel like if I give up coffee I just won’t sustain this at all. I need something I enjoy, it’s just way too depressing otherwise.

I think I’ll try and have my first one or two cups a day with sugar, and if I want a coffee after that I have to have it without sugar.

I went cold turkey. Didn’t enjoy a hot drink for several weeks and then one day picked up the wrong cup of tea and it was vile because it had sugar in it. That was several years ago. Never had sugar in drinks since and enjoy tea and coffee without.
