SAHM, how to lose weight

Just looking for tips here. My friends are able to gym every day but I don't have the childcare. Any tips I can do day to day to lose a stone?....

How big are the dc? If small enough then pop them in the buggy at nap time and walk walk walk. The worst thing I’m finding as a sahm is lack of time to make myself decent meals and the lure of the biscuit tin. I don’t drive anywhere within town and I think that helps keep my weight down as I do a fair amount of walking every day

How old are your DC?

It’s changing your diet that will get the weight off...the exercise bit can be done by going for a long walk (with a few hills!) every day.

3yrs old. I'm approaching 14 stone at 5ft 7. The only way I seem to lose weight is sleeping early as opposed to sitting in front of the t.v. eating my dinner. If I sleep early, no food!

Yes I was going to say the same, put them in the buggy and go for walks. There used to be a group of mum's that did that near me if you wanted some company there could be something like that near you. Our local park borders a gym and there's some outdoor gym equipment too for public use- maybe something like that in your area?
Alternatively you could do some exercise at home - squats and sit ups etc. I had a little step machine I used to keep in my living room and do in front of the TV.
Don't forget your diet too. If it's weight loss you're after I think it's more about what you eat, but exercise will help to tone.

Early bed

Get to the park with your DS and run around, kick a ball, chase him

Eat a lot of good food - homemade soups, stews, salads, eggs, omelets, etc. Cut the bread, ice-cream and general crap.

Only drink non fattening drinks

I'm on the road to losing weight. Some things I'm doing that seem to be helping but it's an extra long road for me as I'm on tablets that the side effect is weight gain...
Going to bed early -ensures I'm getting enough sleep as being tired makes me eat more
Walking lots.
7 minute HITT work outs. These are long enough so I can put the tv on for my DD and get it done before she gets bored.
Prepping lunches for everyone. Takes the worry out of food where I'm more likely to eat more
Having two lunches- I find it just stops me from snacking
Shopping once a week- stops me buying extra crap food.
Drinking loads of water - I cut up half a lemon so it's a bit flavoured.
Im losing weight as I'm calorie restricting to 1200 Cals but my husband is doing a lot less and only restricting to 1800 and losing weight much fast than me.

Maybe you need to look at your diet as a whole and what you eat in a typical day and see if there's any easy changes you can make to cut out some calories a bit. 3 might be a tricky age for walking depending on what your DC is like. Mine wouldn't tolerate too long in the buggy at that age but I did take her to the park most days about 15 mins walk away (and it was uphill) so I'd get the walk there and back and she'd be ok with the buggy knowing she'd get to go to the park.

friends are recommending the keto diet. I tend to cook for the family as a whole so wondering how that could work too.

3yrs old

My youngest turning 3 years old and starting nursery marked the start of my weight loss journey as a SAHM.

Your child qualifies for 3h free nursery place starting from the term after their 3rd birthday - has your DC started nursery?

I decided to use that 3h child free time I gained with the sole purpose of getting healthy. So whether you research healthy meals and meal plan, or go to the gym, or start the Couch to 5K program - you could do something in that nursery time to help you lose weight.

Get the FIIT app. Hundreds of workout classes you can do from home and there are plenty of free ones if you don’t want to pay for it (works out about £10 per month).

Lots of great exercise sessions on YouTube. Davina and fitness blender and quite good. You could do a 30 minute session daily and go for walks.
Cut out snacking too. Just eat 3 healthy and filling meals.
You’ll see the weight come off.

Very little to do with going to the gym. Less calories going in than out-sadly it’s as boring as thatFlowers

I recommend Leslie Sansone (might have got her last name wrong) DVDs/you tube. They are walks that you do on the spot. Takes about 30 minutes to do 5km, without actually moving. Sounds strange but if does actually give you a workout! Or Divina as mentioned already. X

I might try the 16 8 diet as I seem to have naturally fallen into it recently with only a few small changes required going forward. I'm also going to try and do a long walk each day with the kids as my fitbit shows I only currently reach 10k one day a week.

YouTube, quick 15 minute workout. Walk somewhere every day. Drink more water. Substitute pots/rice/pasta at dinner with vegetables. Don't buy junk food. If it isn't there, you can't eat it.

Don't do any crash diets. Just make better choices. Crash diets, you loose the weight. Then you go back to old habits and the weight piles back on.

Cooking for the whole family when you are doing keto / low carb is actually very easy.
Choose meals where the starch element is separate and make extra veg, or make a meat + veg dish and add a side dish of carbs for the rest of the family.

When DH and the DCs eat pasta with meatballs, I have courgette or aubergine with the meatballs and sauce. I have the Sunday roast with vegetables and the rest of the family have roast potatoes too. Ratatouille with eggs tastes great - carb eaters can have it with crusty bread. And so on...

I have DD4 and DD1, 4 year old is at school but I've started using nap times to exercise. I've been doing Joe Wicks (the bodycoach) high intensity interval training. He has loads of free videos on youtube, for all levels, they only take 15 minutes and you don't need any equipment.

Put on a work out dvd. Davina mcall ones are best. Do it five times a week and eat 3 square meals a day.

Hi everyone, so small changes made:

  • 15 minute youtube workout each morning, exhausting! (before nothing)
  • small bowl of cereal (before I had a slice of toast)
  • lunch eggs with kids (before I had nothing)
  • dinner : I eat with my kids about 6pm (before I ate after they went to bed so around half 8/9pm)
  • sleep: bed much earlier, around 9, no snacks (before around midnight, snacking too)

I'm not sure how it will look on the scales but I certainly feel a lot better after 3 days! Any other tips very welcome.

Well done OP, small changes do may a big difference. I've been going for 2 weeks now and can tell a difference in my clothes and fitness levels. I find tracking calories useful, I use My Fitness Pal and try to aim for 1300 calories a day.

Hi @usernotfound0000, I genuinely feel the workouts are giving me more energy and toning more. Just adding a bit more exercise into my day makes me feel so much better, plus eating with the children rather than ravenous till night. I follow the Emi Wong workout myself as was the first that came up.
