My really good friend is on hols atm and going to the gym on my own is pants so haven't been going at all Had planned to force one of my ds's to go for walks with me in the evenings but what with the rain pissing down most nights it hasn't happened either.

My eldest ds(16 in Sept) has got himself a part time job in MacDonalds. He's staying on for 5th/6th year but he loves money so has got off his butt and is gonna work 2 sifts at the weekends and odd hours during holidays etc. I am feeling so proud of him today

OK you people - now that I'm officially off work for all of August(), how about this meet-up. I'd be happy for people to come to my house (that's about 20 minutes drive from Oxford), if that would suit? How about a Friday - either 10 August or 17 August?

Report
Kewcumber · 29/07/2007 13:20

Jackie - I'll check my diary in work tomorrow but I think either of those would suit me.

Report
ForcesSweetheart · 29/07/2007 17:32

Aaww I woulda loved to come along and meet you all, but I'm afraid I don't drive (yet - test booked for early Sept). Count me in for the next meet-up though!

WigWamBam · 30/07/2007 11:02

Will have to check dates with dh - he'll be back tomorrow evening.

17th August is probably a no-go as it's his 50th the day before and he was muttering about trying to go away for a couple of days but I'll wave the idea at him and see what the response is!

I have two stroppy, know-it-all, have-the-last-word-if-it-kills-them six-year-old girls in the house today.

Dd's friend has been here since 9am and her mother won't be collecting her until 2.30 this afternoon ... it was either that or 9.45 because the younger brother is following the sainted Gina's routines and he has to have his lunch and his sleep at exactly the right times. He's two and a half, for heaven's sake ...

I may need cake very shortly. Or wine.

Or Valium ...

WWB you have my sympathies! Small girls are a nightmare!

Have you got anything they can dress up in? Used to keep my dd and friends quiet for hours.......unfortunately it took me hours to clear up afterwards but at least the little treasures were quiet!

Still doing a routine at two and a half. Bit keen, to say the least. Poor you, WWB - we've meandered round town, had coffee in the lovely bookshop, bought cheapo storage thingies in the (almost) pound shop, and are now home, hoping DH rings to say he's landed safely soon.

Report
WigWamBam · 30/07/2007 12:46

I did raise an eyebrow at the routine thing, but there's not much you can do about it really. The girls have been looking forward to playing, and I couldn't really say they could only have three quarters of an hour. So five and a half hours it is ...

They're dressed up as fairies and have been playing with make up. So, for some reason, they both have purple chins. And blue cheeks. One also has green whiskers and a bindi. The other has orange stripes around her neck.

They are out in the garden having a picnic at the moment - interspersed with chasing the cat, finding grubs and picking snails off the plants

They are veering wildly between laughing and giggling, and being in hysterical tears because of some perceived injustice.

My lounge looks a fright; they have been cutting up and painting and using glitter glues and sticking things and getting felt tip pen all over their fingers (no sign of it on any of the paper).

Sounds fab - but you're really earning your wine/chocolate/cake/virtuous low calorie snack. It's wearing, isn't it - constantly trying to keep the peace. I love the sound of the make up.

Report
littlemisssensible · 30/07/2007 12:58

Blimey WWB, you're a saint!!!

Dressing up and make up I'll do but glitter and felt tips no way, hose'!!!!

I think you need Valium AND wine AND chocolate!!!!

Report
WigWamBam · 30/07/2007 13:30

You can keep your virtuous, low-calorie snack, Jackie - I am going to need nothing short of doughnuts once she's gone!

They are still eating their picnic, so it's been reasonably peaceful for the last hour. They are now painting each other's faces again, so heaven knows what weird and wonderful creatures they are about to transform themselves into

Actually, they have gone suspiciously quiet ... which is rather more alarming than when they're squealing and screaming.

At around 2.15 I shall be hauling them from whatever mischief they're at, and having tidy-up time. They made the mess, they will clear it up

I wish I was a drinker; it's at times like this that wine would be an absolute necessity!

Mine went quiet yesterday - upstairs in DS's room, he'd got some sort of transformer thing out of the cupboard in his room that DH refuses to clear out () and plugged it in. I had a scary mummy moment for that one. But also a 'fgs, why can't we clear out his room properly' moment - we really need to do it, so he can have all his stuff up there. It used to be DH's study, and we've (he's) never cleared it out properly. It has, among other things, a box of the old style, big floppy disks (the ones that were actually floppy, iyswim) - we don't have anything that can read them anymore, and I'm not sure we have anything to read the ordinary floppy disks. Just CDs now.

WigWamBam · 30/07/2007 13:44

Oh, you definitely need dh to sort out his rubbish. Dh should do it but if he won't then it's a good excuse for you to get ds' room the way you want it

Floppy floppies ... goodness, they went out with the ark! Dh still has several boxes somewhere ... along with his reel to reel tape recorders, press clippings from the Moon landings, all his University notes from 30 years ago, and his Sinclair ZX computer stuff

Actually, I think most of those were in dd's room before she was born; I put my foot down and insisted on stripping everything out so we could paint the room, and made sure that none of it went back in again.

Maybe a project for me for this August then. Not sure where to put it though (well, I know where I'd like to put it). A Stern Talk may be in order. (with DH, that is - DS has already had his Stern Talk).

I'll bet it went in one ear and out the other ...

Pretty much as dh's probably will too

I find it useful to say to dh that we are going to have to be ruthless with his junk; 30% of it has got to go, and if he doesn't choose the 30% then I will do it without him. He's terrified of me slinging the wrong stuff so has never once let me do it. And 30% repeated at regular intervals over the years represents an awful lot of junk!

I have gradually got him to accept that a lot of this stuff is completely redundant and that we can't keep his entire past. I've also had to dig my heels in about keeping his mother's past as well; keeping things for sentimental purposes is one thing, but I refuse to keep things because they were of sentimental value to his mother. Things like tatty wartime Utility furniture that no-one in the family would give shed-room to, but which dh ended up with because his mother insisted that someone in the family have them. Strange how she preferred to sit on a nice new three-piece suite, while insisting that dh keep odd, broken bits of her furniture ... guess who put that one to rights

Yes - not sure about DS - he's developed a nice line in piteous whimpering - yesterday it was 'I'm a silly, silly boy' - makes you feel like a complete heel, and as if I've somehow been far too harsh on him in the past. I don't think I have, but anyone hearing him go through this routine might have strong grounds for believing I beat him on a regular basis for the tiniest of things.

DH is now home - I'm going to have the talk, though I may wait till tomorrow - he's jetlagged and knackered, so not too receptive (like that's going to change!).

Kids are almost as good at the emotional blackmail as men, aren't they!

Dd's friend has only just gone ... her mother obviously favours a more relaxed approach to timekeeping than I do
