Tall women? Do you weigh more than you look?

Hi all,

I am 5'11, about 12 stone 9 so not quite overweight but bmi is near that end of the scale. However, people are often surprised at how much I weigh. I am a size 12 mainly sometimes a 10 on top. I don't think I look like I am close to being overweight. My brother is stick thin 6'4 and he weighs 15 and a half stone and you wouldn't be able to tell.

Do tall people carry their weight differently? Do you weigh more than you look?

6ft 1, 13st, size 16 and people are surprised I’m not a 10-12/that I weigh as much as I do.

Grin yes that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it!

Seriously though, I’m 5’11 too and I won’t tell you how much Inweigh but it’s quite a lot. I am overweight and a size 14/16 (and working on reducing it) but I think I do carry it reasonably well, better than I would it I was shorter. 12 and a half stone would probably see me a size 12/14. That’s the other thing I find, I have to lose quite a lot before I drop a dress size Sad

I think it depends on your build as well. I’m the same height and weight as my friend, but she looks a lot slimmer than me as I have a smaller build so probably carrying more fat than she is.

You sound just like me. I’m also 5ft 11, weigh anywhere from 67-72kg when I’m not pregnant and depending on how fit I am, but I’m a size 10-12 (usually nearer a 10) and have a pretty muscular figure. Stepped on the scale at my booking appointment a few weeks ago expecting to be somewhere around there, maybe a little more... 83kg 😰. Still have the beginnings of a 6 pack at 20 weeks. I don’t get it. So I tend to just never weigh myself and judge it on how I feel instead.

@Freaking0ut Yeah same. I got down to 11 stone last year and I was still a size 12 mainly and didn't look that different.

yep - DH and i are both tall. Takes quite a bit to show we've gained/lost weight, esp if you're long in the body like we are.

I went on a diet couple of years ago and i knocked off 20lb before anyone noticed!

@NuffingChora Yes I am always surprised when I step on the scale I always think how do I weigh that much! My friends are all about 5'3 and 9 stone so I feel huge in comparison.

I'm 5'8ish and 12 stone, need to lose a bit round my tummy atm, but dsis didnt believe my weight until I showed her the ticket from the gym scales. Usually wear size 10-12.

Yes! I'm 5'9" and currently weigh about 80kg . Before children I was 75kg and at my heaviest have been 100kg. Never been in single figures stone wise as an adult and when I weighed 10.5 stone was quite ill.

Sorry for mixing up my stones and kilos in this post...

Yes. 5'9", a smidge under 11 stone, size 12 mostly, but look slimmer.

When I was a smidge under 10 stone (so, a full stone and a half away from being medically underweight), a woman in the street hissed at me that i looked pencil thin and disgusting Confused

Meant to say people are always astonished if I ever tell them how heavy I am! I look "normal" (not obese, not skinny)

My best mate (5’10”), ‘weighs heavier’ than she looks. Unfortunately, I missed the memo. I’m not especially ‘tall’ at 5’8” but I’m 10st (sz12) and look a bit pudgy, though my BMI is about 21. I’m quite narrow framed though, so I don’t need much meat on me before I look chubby (yay).

Also the GP nurse always measures my waistband not my waist so my 'key waist statistic' or whatever it is looks far too large as well because I wear low-slung jeans.

I think they've got me down as some kind of mannatee.

Ideally I'd like to get down to about 11 and a half just to feel better in myself.

I weigh about 12 stone, and a few pounds

At 6ft, that makes me quite high up in bmi (close to overweight)

Wear size 12 clothes (used to be 14, but vanity sizing means now wear 12), so surely at my height that means I am reasonably slim Grin

I have heard that bmi works best for people of average height, it is overly harsh on tall people, and not strict enough on smaller people iyswim

I also am bigger boned (big feet, big old head (men's L for helmets etc) , wide shoulders, wide hips) so am embracing this look, and stopped wishing I was "petite" years ago Wink

Bmi is not the be all and end all

No - the opposite in fact. I’m 5’9 and 11st, generous size 14 with big tummy and bum and chunky arms and thighs. I always feel shit when I read these threads as most people roughly my weight and height are in much smaller clothes and consider themselves slim.

Height and weight are accurate btw as recently weighed and measured for surgery.

Humph.

I think I'm the opposite! I'm 5ft 6 and 9 1/2 stone. I've got a really short body and long legs. When I gain weight it always goes on my torso first making me look huge! If I get to 10 stone I look really chunky up top with skinny legs.

My friend, who is the same height as me, looks skeletal if she drops below 10 1/2 stone. She's got shorter legs and a long torso.

It's so weird isn't it!

Yep! 13st, 5ft 9 and size 14 - sometimes 16 on bottoms. When I asked a friend for her honest opinion (she wouldn't lie, we are close enough to handle truths!) she was surprised and said I look more of a 12. I have also recently had a baby so hoping to get back to 12st 7lb soon which I was before DD

ivykaty that’s really interesting. I’ve just done that measurement and I’m just squeezing into the ‘healthy’ range wheras with BMI calculation, I am bordering on obese. I give up!

SolitudeAtAltitude · 31/05/2019 14:03

ivykaty, I prefer those results as I have all my weight and width in my hips, not my waist Grin
