How to trim the waist?

I'm on a mission to lose weight but in the mean time I'm sure I'd feel happier if I could just take control back of my waistline. What exercises are best for drawing your core up and in again? It would make such a difference.

My gym instructor says anything for toning up belly and thighs/bum, he advises squats, squats, squats.
He says anything else is good, but squats will hit those particular areas.

Planks are good. So is bird dog. Overhead presses with kettlebells or dumbbells work the core much more than you might expect. Especially if you do them seated as you then get no assistance from bum and legs.

Most belly fat is lost through diet and I think stress contributes to belly fat too so more sleep (easier said than done)
But exercise-wise I would go for sprinting or a low impact equivalent - short sharp shock
I feel my core engaging with pull ups (assisted pull up machine) push ups and a lot of the weights actually, dead lifts are good
