Please god tell me how to stop eating...

I used to be a size 8. Then went up to a 10. Then a 12. Now I'm nearly in a 14.

I eat like a pig. Today I've had:-

  • golden syrup protein porridge pot
  • left over chicken pasta bake
  • cheese and pickle sandwich (left over from a meeting at work)
  • a double chocolate cookie (big one)
  • two mini rolls
  • two bags of crisps
  • a bagel with Philadelphia
  • ham egg and homemade chips
  • a bag of mini eggs

I'm disgusted with myself writing all that out. Shock but I just CANNOT STOP.

Please help me - if you've managed to kick this kind of eating to the kerb and lose weight, HOW?!

Low carb, I found it was the only way to beat the cravings and lose weight. You have to want to do it though, no half measures and cheat days. If you stick to it you will find your appetite decreases massively and you will lose weight. Read up on keto and see if it is for you.

I’m in the same boat OP.
I’ve been advised that keto isn’t a good idea if you’ve had your gallbladder out, does anyone have any experience of keto post gallbladder removal?
I’m honesty thinking about hypotherapy at this point!

Well I had a large back tooth pulled three weeks ago and it has totally put me off eating. I'm miserable but I'm looking the best I have in years (I am normally an obese woman who still can't stop stuffing her face even though I hate how I look). It's a bit of an extreme solution mind.

What’s your trigger?

Are you bored?
Are you sad?
Is it cos it’s just there?

Work out your trigger and then put barriers in place

Don’t buy it in/have it in the house
Get up and god for a quick walk or run up and down the stairs
Brush your teeth and drink and big glass of water

Try some healthy swaps, so instead of all the cakes and sugary garbage-
Almonds
Rice cakes
Cut up veg
Celery with peanut butter
One small freddo
One small
Mini milk

Log everything with my fitness pal. Exercise a lot.

You don’t have to do the super strict no carb thing, but you definitely need to drastically reduce those empty carbs and sugary shite and increase your protein.
MYou don’t need to go on a ‘diet’ as such But something like eggs for breakfast, chicken and salad for lunch, fish & veg for dinner-type thing.

Start ASAP and be strict with yourself for a week. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you get those cravings for shite under control when you’re not feeding that vicious cycle of eating nutritionless crap-feeling bloated-then feeling starving....and eating more crap.

Hi read up on the harcombe diet. It talks a lot about food cravings and what fuels them.

It's simple maths. If you consume more than you burn then you will put weight on.

Make sure you are eating protein with every meal. This will help you feel fuller for longer.

Ditch the fried food, opt for poached eggs or scrambled.

It's a lifestyle change, not a diet. It shouldn't restrict you, you just need to make healthier choices.

Porridge is a great start to the day, maybe add some fresh fruit alongside it too. The sugar should keep you going.

Also, do you drink water? Most of the time our body tells us we are hungry when in fact we are thirsty. Invest in a decent water bottle and keep it with you at work.

Have 3 main balanced meals with two snacks. You should start to see a difference.

I'd say watch 'Earthlings' (tough) and/or 'Forks Over Knives' (easy watching) then go vegan for a month. It just makes you so much more mindful of what you are putting into your body so helped me massively. Also it's actually enjoyable much to my surprise!!

My fitness pal app. It makes you view food differently. You’ll look up the calories in a bag of mini eggs and think wow I could have so much more healthier choices.

I’m exactly the same, I’ve literally in the last week just forced myself to stop the snacking of rubbish. It’s hard but it only took about 3 days for the sugar cravings to subside and I’ve already lost 5 pounds and my tummy feels less bloated. I can’t stick to diets or only eat boring meals so I’m keeping my meals the same but just not eating chocolate / biscuits / cake etc. I reckon I was regularly adding 500 calories a day on with snacking on these things, if not more. I’m having a piece of fruit now for a snack or just accepting that it’s ok not to be constantly eating... it’s hard, I think you need to be really fed up of how you look in order to break the habit! I just can’t face another summer of feeling fat and wearing tent like clothes!

Paul McKenna, I can make you think app worked for me. It helps to reprogram your mind to think of food differently.
I used to be just like you but started using the app and went to a Christmas party with a buffet with all of my favourite foods. I didn't touch anything. Not because I was on a diet but because I just didn't fancy any of it . I was amazed as it wasn't difficult.
You do a mind exercise a day followed by listening to him talk as you go to sleep.

Also one thought that I keep repeating to myself is that in order to lose weight I don’t have to DO anything, I just have to NOT DO something, i.e. shovel rubbish into my face every day. It’s helping me so far!

Read the Obesity code. It will help you understand what's going on. Constant grazing on carbs and sugar is just the fastest way to weight gain. If you could stop the snacking and eat better meals it would be a start.

Thank you all. Some good tips there. I'm going to start small and make it my mission not to snack on any junk today, that's all.

For breakfast I have overnight oats with Greek yoghurt and raspberries. An apple for morning snack. Pasta bake for lunch. Two hard boiled eggs for afternoon snack. And something with 5% mince for dinner.

Just one day of no snacks and I'll try to keep going from there.

Good luck OP. It is not easy but it is about retraining your appetite into what are normal size portions and your stomach about when it is full. When you have got into habits of endlessly grazing and making poor nutrition choices for these snacks you will gain weight. You know this.

MFP app is great as it forces you to face the sheer amount of calories you are consuming. Set yourself an achievable daily amount and stick to it 4/5 out of 7 days.

Are you at home all day? Or do you bring all that choc into work?

I find being at work, or doing something active (walking the dog, sorting the garden, sport) means I don't snack.

On days I work from home I eat more chocolate and biscuits....

What’s your trigger?

This. If something's in the house I'll eat it, but when I'm at the supermarket I can usually say, nah, putting that back/choosing just one thing.

Breakfast - your second post sounds right to me - overnight oats, or eggs.

Just don't snack for starters. Be strict with yourself. You eat 3 times a day at mealtimes, never inbetween. If you feel hungry inbetween (real hunger pangs, not just a moment's boredom or the offer of a spare sandwich) then have a drink, preferably water. The lack of snacks should help to start with.

Go low carb. You started the day with high carb, high sugar, which is setting you up to craving carbs during the day.
A better choice would be something like scrambled eggs, as it wouldn't cause blood sugar peaks and dips, and you'll probably be ok until lunchtime.
Nearly everything you ate had a lot of carbs in.

Snowflake9 · 27/03/2019 08:21

Good luck today OP!

One more thing that may help, try to avoid anything you would have for dinner for your lunch. That's one of my golden rules I stick too. I wouldn't have a pasta salad for dinner so I eat that for lunch. I wouldn't have a tuna wrap so I have that for lunch . That sort of thing.

I have faith in you and can tell you really want to kick this habit 😁😁😁😁

Low carb is great to begin with but it's hard to sustain in the long run. I have cracked it by only having carbs at lunch. For dinner I have more vegetables and substitute rice for steamed vegetables (great with a curry) or spaghetti with courgette.

I have started altering one thing at a time.

Changed my breakfast to a healthier one. Then once I had got into a habit with that I changed my lunch. Then I started to look at dinners and started to have more veg than something and chips everytime. Now I have started to reduce snacks and actually ask myself whether I am really hungry when I have one.

It's very slow but I am sick of the dieting/over eating cycle.

Good luck OP

I'm at work in the day - it's always someone's birthday and they bring cakes etc. Alternatively there's been a meeting in the day and any leftover buffet food is put in the communal kitchen. I suppose my trigger is making a hot drink - that's when I go to the work kitchen, see all the goodies and take one! That accounts for the cookie and two mini rolls yesterday.

DP and I are also in the habit of buying "treats" every time we pop to the shop for milk etc, and that was the mini eggs.

DP doesn't get home from work until 8pm-ish, so I always snack late afternoon too as my body is hungry for dinner then. By the time DP is home, I'm not really hungry but eat then because that's when he has dinner.

Thanks for all the positivity - I'll report back and let you know how I get on!
