I'm going to reverse my diabetes with weight loss.

I've been in denial about it for years. I'm a well known doctor avoider so I have slipped through the net.
My blood sugar was 8.1 this morning and I weighed 245 Lbs. I have hip and knee problems which will be improved by weight loss. Going to get my blood pressure checked at the pharmacy later.
I'm menopausal too.
Falling apart.
I've been reading up over the weekend but if anyone has any top tips or wants to keep me company feel free.

@Champagnebrain

you can do it if you plan! My Mum is 52 and lost 6 stone reversing her Diabetes! Best thing she ever did and shes halved her medication by doing it.

She says to this day her best tip is Pre-Planning. havinh healthy snacks available at all times and batch cooking healthy dinners when she can't be bothered to cook removed all her temptation.

Good Luck! & I'm Rooting for you! [smile[

Research keto, seriously it will lower your sugars and you will lose weight. It has been my way of life since June last year and my numbers never go above 6 after a meal. I have lost 11kgs without trying. Good luck.

My dad has reversed his T2 diabetes through weight loss. He has been following the 5:2 diet and upping his activity levels.

Another vote for Keto! Try the fb group Easy Keto UK as a place to start. I’ve lost 2st on Keto in a couple of months and it’s teally easy after the initial week or so. Good luck.

I would suggest getting a referral to a dietician via gp & getting good personalized advice

I would splash out £5 on Dr Michael Moseley 8 week blood sugar diet book which is a moderately low carb diet, there are a lot of case studies in that. I'm not diabetic but found it easy to follow.

Doubt if gp would refer to a dietician! Normally an appointment with diabetic nurse and a diet sheet.

And YY to Michael Moseley books. Or Dr Unwins diet - he's a gp who has done lots of work on this. Both give sound medical advice imo

Thanks for all the comments. I'm glad it's worked for others

Ive looked into Keto thanks. As a lifelong vegetarian it may be too tricky.
I also need to cook for the family and a couple of times have lunch on the go. But I will get there.
I'd ideally like a veggie keto meal planner so I don't have to think, but I can't find one via Google.
I'd like to go to fat camp like the Biggest Loser on TV. ( The I can have Bob look after me, although he had a heart attack, so may not)

Egg salad for lunch and a cup of mixed fresh berries.

5:2 reversed my DH's prediabetes.

Good for you for tackling this. I wish you the best of luck.

My family has a history of diabetes, I was diagnosed with it and at 5ft3 and 11st decided to lose the weight to reverse it. I've lost 3 and a half stone and my blood sugar is now normal. I did this over about 10 months and cut down on white carbs so no bread, white rice or pasta.

Would also recommend the hairy dieters books for filling recipes. I've also cut down on my meat eating and now try to eat vegetarian twice a week with lentil curry or bean chilli.

You can definitely do it!

Type 1 or type 2? You’re going to struggle to reverse type 1. If type 2 absolutely try weight loss, low carb and Mediterranean diet, many people have found that these help.

My BIL reversed his diabetes by losing some weight and increasing activity a bit. He cut down a lot on carbs, which helped lose weight, and now still limits carbs and has no symptoms of diabetes, and his blood sugar levels are normal.

It can be done, and is far preferable to having to be on tablets.

Do you mind if I join you, although I am not quite diabetic?
I have been head in the sand about my blood sugar which has crept up since having GD. My hba1c was 39 a while ago, I have also been diagnosed with PCOS.

My mum was diagnosed diabetic recently. My grandma was years ago. I am really freaking out and wanting to stem the tide.

Just got some bathroom scales and ready to tackle this I think, keeping a food diary, mindful choices. Exercise is tricky as I have CFS fibro and POTS. We now have an exercise bike though.

Weight yesterday 241.2lb

@Cagliostro Please join me!
Thanks

I have the blood sugar diet book now. It's not great for vegetarians but I'm hoping to pick a few things out of it recipe wise. The principals make perfect sense though

Blood pressure machine wasn't working at the pharmacy so that's still a job outstanding.
I'm still feeling determined. Let's hope it lasts.

Can I join you too please? I was diagnosed with type 2 just before Christmas - not a great surprise as several family members have it too. I've been advised by GP to try to lose some weight and see if I can control it that way.

I had a blood test a few days ago - 3 month check since diagnosis. Tomorrow I have doc's appointment to get my blood test results so I am crossing my fingers that my blood glucose levels have dropped. It will be interesting to see if I have made the right changes - I have been generally eating a lowish carbs Mediterranean diet and have tried to walk as much as possible. I have lost just over a stone but really need to lose 2 more. I will let you know how I get on tomorrow!!

Thanks champ :)
Welcome jim!

I had quite a big lunch today but I didn’t snack at all which in some ways works better for me in terms of sugar etc.

I am having major anxiety issues tonight though so tomorrow will be tricky if I get bugger all sleep!

I even tried getting on the exercise bike to calm me down but nope. At least for once I’m not craving chocolate etc which I often am when I am anxious.

How did your appointment go @hellojim ?

I've managed to stick to no snacks and no desserts. I have cut back on carbs but I'm not as strict as I could be.
I have the weekend to plan a bit more thoroughly.

I have an exercise bike but haven't been on it yet as my hip hurts and I'm wondering if it will aggravate it?

Anyway, I'm feeling quietly determined.
Time will tell!

do read up on which diet it is that works, as I think it does need to be low carb for diabetes. I watched the interviews with the person who's study was in the news earlier this year, but I can't remember exactly.

My appointment went well, my blood glucose level has dropped to 42 on the Hba1c blood test which shows the levels over the past few months. GP was very pleased and said that I should carry on doing what I'm doing. I am very relieved as I had been hoping that I was doing the right things so it is good to see that it is working. I am not sure what my levels were in December but I was told that if they remained that high I would need medication.

Champagnebrain don't be disheartened, you are taking lots of steps in the right direction which is a positive thing! You can eat carbs but try to eat wholegrain rather than white carbs and don't have too many. The exercise bike sounds like a great idea. Do you like walking? You can start slowly and then build up your speed as your fitness improves. I think even making an effort not to sit down for too long helps, even if it just means you are standing up. I find a Fitbit helps as it can be set to remind me to get up and move.

Can I join you? I’m not diabetic yet but I’m sure I’m on the way. I have 6 stone to lose but would be happy with 5. I’ve just done a healthy Asda shop, avoiding the reduced bakery items, so plan to start tomorrow. I’m planning to eat lower carb with occasional fruit. I would love to be a couple of stone lighter for summer.

Hi @JeanieJardine55
Please join. I need company.

Not a bad week for me. 3lbs down. Could have been better but I haven't been especially strict .
I haven't done any exercise at all as my hips and knee hurt, weight loss will help that so I'm probably going to need to lose more before I start.
I have high blood pressure to add to my list of ailments caused by fat.

Their is a thread in the weight loss forums, there's a few of us doing the blood sugar diet

Report
smallereveryday · 17/03/2019 10:50

I have done just that. 253Lbs (with HPB, T2 diabetes, Hip, knee and ankle arthritis) to 190Lbs today.
Feel amazing. (and healthy - looking forward to a 2 hr walk in a minute - something I couldn't even of contemplated 3 months ago) .

I have looked at the blood sugar diet, I can't find much for vegetarians.
What I'd like it a meal plan I could blindly follow without putting any thought into it.
