How to eat enough protein?

Bigheadache · 30/01/2019 15:05

For my weight to lose weight I should be eating approx 200g of protein a day... How the heck does anyone manage this short of eating a whole chicken three times a day?

On Monday I had salmon and eggs for breakfast, pork for lunch and chicken for dinner and still managed only half what I'm supposed to!

My PT said I should have 120g a day - I can only achieve this with a protein shake

As mentioned protein shakes. Look around because they vary in calories and protein amounts. Mine is 113 calories per scoop and I do half milk/half water so 60 cals for the milk. Protein 25g.

One normal size helping of mince and you're halfway there, OP. Remember that there is also significant protein in peas, beans, lentils and mushrooms.
200g is less than half a pound, it’s really not enormous when spread across three meals.

200g is a huge amount! Where on earth did you get that number from?

Unless you're a 120kg body builder with muscles to maintain, that's far too much.

Which protein shake do you use MashedSpud?

200g is a minuscule amount of protein literally is roughly decent size chicken breast. I eat 5 meals a day each contains over 100g of protein all my protein, fats and carbs weighed to whatever goals I’ve got at any given time.

I don’t use protein shakes as most contain sugars and junk that’s not required in the slightest.

I think some people are getting confused on how to measure out their protein, eating a 200g chicken breast does not mean you are getting 200g of protein unfortunately @strongbeatsskinny . Agree with some other posters that 200g is exceptionally high, normal rule is 1g per lb body weight. Greek yoghurt is my saviour for hitting protein intake!

I use Nature’s Garden isolate protein powder from Holland and Barrett’s. Both the chocolate and strawberry are nice. The unflavoured is vegan friendly.

I’m vegetarian btw so it’s easier for me to bump up my protein intake with shakes.

Are you sure on the 200g? Because that is a lot.

I'm seriously overweight (and trying to lose it) and I'm supposed to have about 70g of protein a day..

There’s a protein calculator online to figure out how much you need per day. Mines 40 odd grams a day.

I looked up how much I should get to try to be losing fat rather than muscle and it was more like 100g than 200g. I'm not sure how to do it though, no point drinking a protein shake when you're trying to control calories.
Would the Weetabix with added protein help, does anyone think?

"I eat 5 meals a day each contains over 100g of protein all my protein, fats and carbs weighed to whatever goals I’ve got at any given time. "

OK, but I'm guessing from your nickname that you're body building rather than losing weight.

200g protein - sure fire way to gout & kidney issues...

Extra egg white with your eggs.

Lower fat, high protein.

@strongbeatsskinny I think you’ve got your numbers out by a factor of 10, 200g is almost a whole chicken worth of protein and if you’re actually eating more than that then please go see your GP and get your kidneys checked, they may we’ll be struggling.
OP - peas are cheap and full of protein, and low fat cottage cheese or plain yoghurt. 200g does sound like a lot though if you’re trying to lose weight - that’s 800 calories just from protein and I think it will be difficult to get a balanced diet if you’re trying to lose weight on that.

200g can't be right, my protein goal is 85g a day and that's with 5 days a week at the gym.

The average woman only needs around 50g. So it is really unlikely you would need 200g. If your bodyweight is high enough to need that much then you should probably be on a specialised plan by a dietician.

Remember too much (like most things) can really cause your body damage.

Strongbeatsskinny - i think that is because you are not counting your protein very well.
You reckon a decent size chicken breast has 200g of protein, but unless it is some genetically modified gianormous chicken then it will only have about 50g. You are probably eating less than you think, which is why you are healthy.
Your body copes well with excess but over 4x as much as you need over many years WILL cause problems.

@strongbeatsskinny when you are giving out wrong information to people it really wouldn't be something I would be laughing about. All we were pointing out was that you don't seem to be counting protein correctly, the weight of an item in grams doesn't mean it contains that amount of protein. For someone so fit and healthy it seems a bit bizarre that you aren't aware of this

A 100g chicken breast has around 25g of protein. So your chicken breast with 200g of protein must weigh around 850g Grin

I aim to eat 120g of protein a day, tend to manage this by including high protein granola, high protein yoghurt, high protein pasta, tuna, chicken and a shake.

"The average woman only needs around 50g"

In weightloss chat, it's how much a dieting woman needs that we're discussing isn't it? I heard we need more than usual to ensure that we're not losing muscle instead of fat. When I calculated online it came to about 90gs. I don't think it's going to be possible for me though.

To eat 200 grams of protein you would need to eat about 8 chicken breasts or equivalent. So that tiny person (who is a similar size to me - 5 foot and 47 kilos) probably isn't eating that much. And I don't think you should either OP!
