Losing weight on holiday

I go on a 2 week holiday soon and I’ve totally failed at losing a few lbs and shaking up for it....

I could do with losing 1.5 st but haven’t been able to find the space in my head for fitness/weight loss due to the terminal illness and subsequent death of a close family member. I also work full time and feel guilty that exercising would eat into family time. I’m coming out the other side of the emotions now and I desperately want to kick start some good habits. I feel shit about my blobby body and want to get a grip on things now before i get bigger...

There will be daily yoga/exercise classes (30 mins) and the pool is only open to lane swimmers first thing in the morning.

I’m planning to take my running stuff and run then swim then yoga every day. Realistically I could do the run and swim before the DC wake up (they always lie in on holiday). I think I’ll be able to resist junk food.

My motivation is the biggest barrier but I feel this is a great opportunity to reset it and get my health mojo back. Being in a bikini every day should also spur me on!!

I mentioned it to a friend and she said “oh just enjoy yourself and don’t worry about it” but my habits atm are not good and if I come back from this holiday even heavier I’ll just feel like I’m spiraling down and down.

Has anyone else used a holiday as an opportunity to lose weight and shape up? I don’t expect to lose much but if it can get me back in the right frame of mind it feels like I should take the opportunity to do so!

Definitely do it!

I’m in the middle of my weight loss journey and off in holiday tonight.

While there’re a few treat meals planned it’s on maintenance calories An day and others day I’ll be doing my weight loss calories.

I won’t be able to do my normal exercise routine but I will be taking advantage of the facilities to try out thing like swimming and jogging.

If I lose it’s a bonus but I’m hoping at the very least I’ll maintain.

People have told me not to stress out about losing weight on holiday and the truth is I’m not stressed about it at all. I want to carry on doing what I’ve been doing and worked out a plan to keep it all within balance.

March was my first holiday when I’d been losing weight for a few weeks. I managed to exercise, follow my diet and work in a treat and whenI came back I had managed to lose weight.

You can do this!

Thank you for the encouragement!!

Thing is I eat like I’m on holiday most of the time so if I let rip even more even I’m away I’ll be the size of a house.

I don’t calorie count, but I will avoid bread, pasta, pizza etc. Meat, fish and salads for me!

I am strangely excited. Though maybe I’ll be taking that back when I’m trying to run in hot heat.......

Enjoy your holiday!

I will report back (like anyone cares Wink)

Do you run at all already?

Yes I find being on holiday a great opportunity to diet. I once lost nearly a stone in three weeks by low carbing whilst in Spain - eating out was easy - chicken and salads or fish and salads.

bit I used to do more than I do now, and it’s not my most favourite thing so I’ll only go for 30 mins / 5km.

ooh well done you!

I lost weight on holiday. A combination of healthier options, buffet fatigue (it was lovely but by day 3 I was fed up) and more exercise.

Definitely a great idea, I have the same plan. A new environment is a great chance to change habits. Also if you go somewhere hot it's easier to drink lots of water. I will keep reminding myself to reach for water when I'm hungry instead of food because often thirst and hunger signals get muddled. You can still have a great holiday and fit working out into your day Smile

Having the pool and yoga classes on hand and the time to exercise makes it much easier. I eat less when I'm in a swimsuit too!

Youll be out of your normal environment which could be very helpful. However swimming yoga and running daily may be a bit much. Aim for one out of three, if you do more its a mega bonus.

I agree. Swimming yoga and running every day sounds too much. I think you’ll be setting yourself up to feel a failure if you don’t do all three every day.

Also don’t underestimate how much harder it is to run in the heat. Go early morning or after dark if you can.

Personally I think eating and drinking nice things is one of the very nicest things about a holiday and trying to diet on holiday sounds pretty miserable to me but I have been where you are, totally focused on my weight loss and know it’s hard to let it go sometimes.

I agree but stuffing my face with chips and bread isn’t necessary. I can still eat yummy things and I deffo won’t be miserable. Being the biggest I’ve ever been does however make me miserable!

I know. I really do get you. I’ve been where you have been and I know how determined and focused you have to be to change that. But being a bit relaxed for one week won’t mean that you’ve failed and all your hard work is ruined. So don’t feel bad if you do wat crisps and lie on a sunbed for a week. That’s all I was trying to say. Have a lovely holiday!

I’ve just come back from my holiday and I didn’t lose any weight, but I didn’t put any on either.

Had buffet breakfast, so had loads of lovely fruit and then had an egg and small roll. Lunch had a Caesar salad. Dinner had fish, vegetables, tapas, paella etc. Stuck to fish, and no meat apart from chicken. Loads of water and diet drinks all day, glass of wine in the evening. Didn’t feel deprived at all, and ate less than I do at home because I didn’t snack at all - no fridge or cupboards to tempt me.
