Dress size vs weight loss

I’m perplexed! I’ve lost nearly a stone in 2 months and started exercising a lot more - I feel great but haven’t gone down a dress size and don’t understand why. Could it be my age? I’d put on weight over a few years and am only 6lb off my original weight and was hoping to fit into my old clothes soon!

I'm the opposite. I can get into some of my previously tight clothes but no weight loss showing on the scales.

Bodies are funny things Grin

I lost 3 stone and went down only one dress size ......if that. Actually about half a dress size

Are you buying new dresses?
I know that lots of the clothes I'm wearing are 12-14 which I've had ages and I'm much closer to a 16.

New clothes haven't stretched with my weight gain this year Shock

Also different shops sizing comes up very different so make sure you are using your usual ones.

I'd also try measuring yourself.

I have a pair of jeans form my skinny days and although I didn't seem to drop much in new clothes sizes, I managed to squeeze into them.

I wish I’d measured myself at the start so I could compare with now. I’m mainly trying on old clothes as I have loads of gorgeous stuff that I really want to wear again. I honestly thought it would be easier than this.
I only went from a size 10 to a 12/14 by putting on 17 lb Ish over 3 years (of stress!), 11 lb of which I’ve lost. I’ll measure myself today.
Thanks for the replies - I know it’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but it’s making me feel a bit meh

I've always needed to lose at least 1.5 stone to go down a dress size - I know this well as someone who is always going up and down sizes Hmm . I've lost 2 stone since January and have only just gone down a dress size - I find although my weight loss is steady, I seem to change shape all of a sudden - so hopefully you'll wake up in the next week or two and find yourself needing smaller clothes Grin

Curious here. I'm v v overweight and I think at my stage (obese) it can be several stone to a dress size.

I think at the smaller sizes it's closer to a stone though.

I was going to say about a stone for a dress size normally. Sometimes you can fudge it with pilates or anything that works your stomach muscles giving you more of a waist. That said, there's some clothing that still look good after 4 stone+ weight lose, you wouldn't have thought I'd won it at both a size 20 and 12

I’m in the process of trying to lose baby weight and I’ve lost almost a stone. I can fit in pre baby tops but trousers I’m still not yet. I think a lot is to do with where your fat/weight sits. I’ve lost 5 inches from my bust and waist but only 0.5 inches from my umbilical/belly button area and hips.
If you measure diff areas I think you’d find you’ve lost from some but others are stubborn.
Also weight on scales is a tricky one to go by solely as you will be putting on muscle exercising too.

My bust and upper body is definitely the problem for me. My old jeans don’t fit yet but my bigger ones are now too big after losing the weight so that’s at least some progress.
It’s the dresses that are the problem. Embarrassingly I have 14 lovely dresses that don’t fit!!

I’ve lost a stone but feel like I haven’t gone down a dress size - though I probably have iykwim. I’m smaller up top (10-12) & my size 14 trousers/jeans fit better now. Think I was actually a size 16 in trousers at one point, but refused to admit it & continued to squeeze into 14 Blush

I'm glad I'm not alone . I've lost three stone and not dropped a dress size. Admittedly my size 18's aren't so tight but I still can't get into a 16. So pissed off. I thought I must have been bloody HUGE at 16.5 stone and now much smaller but I guess not. Bah!

Old stretchy clothes will deceive you. I've lost almost 3.5stone now, and have seemingly gone down one size. But actually it's more like two - I might have been able to fit in floaty, jersey fabric size 18 dresses before, but now I can fit in size 18 jeans.

I’ve lost 22lbs of a 70lb target. The only place I’ve noticed a sizing difference is going from a 38G to 36F. Still fitting into my same jeans although less squishy but I definitely expected to be buying new clothes.

Sounds as though you are losing from your bottom half not your top half? Not much you can do except keep losing but you have my sympathy as I am very top heavy post-baby and need 16 tops but 12-14 bottoms. Dresses are a nightmare which is annoying as I always used to wear dresses when I was more in proportion.

Thank you all for commenting. I am going to keep going until I’m at my target. I stupidly tried on some ‘pre weight gain’ jeans this morning that are not even close to fitting and I’m determined not to put on any old clothes again until I’m at my desired weight! If they still don’t fit I’ll get rid of them and buy new ones!

EatRepaeat I hear you.

I have lost 12lbs (another stone to go - I am 5'8") and although some of my clothes feel a bit looser, I am certainly not down a size. I've always gone my the maxim of "a stone per dress size" (roughly) and am feeling a bit disheartened. Also, hardly anyone has noticed...I'd be greatly motivated if someone said "wow you look great - you've lost weight"! Any idea when that will happen?

I feel the same fuzzy! No one has noticed and, although that’s not the reason I’m doing it, it would be nice to think I look a bit different after losing 11 lb and starting the 3 times a week 6 weeks ago!!

Agreed eat. My DH and I are losing weight together and at least we can encourage each other, but I thought I might look a bit different by now. Maybe everyone else needs specs!

Small success- I have been doing my bra up on the middle set of hooks instead of the outside one for the past couple of weeks.

EatRepeatEatRepeat · 28/05/2018 19:10

That is a success Fuzzy
I’ve found that I now don’t have to hold my breath before zipping up my coat which is a pleasant improvement Smile

Definitely!
Maybe I should try wearing more fitted things, rather than the jersey leggings and tunics that are my staple.
I'd like to be size 14 again. (Now 16)

EatRepeatEatRepeat · 28/05/2018 20:15

I find the problem with leggings is that because they stretch they give me a false sense of security! It’s when I try my jeans on that I realise I’ve expanded Grin

I was told I looked well last week. That could of been the facial rather than (in my opinion) big weightloss. I’m hoping vine summer I’ll emerge like a beautiful svelte size 12 butterfly

Since I daren't buy any new clothes, I have bought myself some new wellingtons this week. Wellingtons don't care about the size of my bum. (And I needed some. And they were half price)

Eatrepeat definitely get a facial or a massage. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking as to how I put my needs behind everyone else in the family & this has meant neglecting my health weight wise & mentally being a bit burnt out. I’m spending this year doing more stuff for me little things like going to bed early to read or a long Sunday bath are definitely giving me more headspace & motivation
